Winemaker Notes

The source of the grapes for Infamous Goose is Marlborough’s Wairau River Valley, where stony, sandy loam topsoil covers deep layers of free-draining shingle. This low-fertility soil reduces vigor, yielding lush, aromatic, ripe fruit. The fruit is picked at optimal ripeness and destemmed and the free-run juice is cool-fermented in stainless steel tanks. Aging on the lees, also in stainless steel tanks, provides body and complexity before blending, fining, filtering and bottling.

The wine has fresh aromas and flavors of nectarine, peach and gooseberry followed by fresh acidity and a clean finish.

This wine pairs with fish, shellfish, salads and white meats.

COMMENTARY: Another excellent value from New Zealand, the 2016 Infamous Goose Sauvignon Blanc is light on the palate, yet steady with its somewhat pungent, herbal flavors. TASTING NOTES: This wine does not hold back from the heritage of the grape variety. Its focused dried herbs and dried citrus flavors invite a plate of oysters garnished with freshly-picked lemons and a few twists of black pepper. (Tasted: February 13, 2018, San Francisco, CA)

Infamous Goose, New Zealand
Infamous Goose Winery Video
Fruit from Marlborough, New Zealand’s mecca for Sauvignon Blanc, takes Infamous Goose Sauvignon Blanc to new heights of pure flavor. One of New Zealand’s sunniest and driest regions, with a relatively cool climate, Marlborough provides a long, slow ripening period that intensifies flavors in the fruit.

The wine is named for the Infamous Goose, a.k.a. the moa, a giant flightless bird that roamed the South Island of New Zealand well before humans appeared. Is the Infamous Goose really extinct? Rumors and legends abound. The only sure thing is this wine.

Capable of a vast array of styles, Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp, refreshing variety that equally reflects both terroir and varietal character. Though it can vary depending on where it is grown, a couple of commonalities always exist—namely, zesty acidity and intense aromatics. This variety is of French provenance. Somm Secret—Along with Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc is a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon. That green bell pepper aroma that all three varieties share is no coincidence—it comes from a high concentration of pyrazines (herbaceous aromatic compounds) inherent to each member of the family.

An icon and leading region of New Zealand's distinctive style of Sauvignon blanc, Marlborough has a unique terroir, making it ideal for high quality grape production (of many varieties). Despite some common generalizations, which could be fairly justified given that Marlborough is responsible for 90% of New Zealand's Sauvignon blanc production, the wines from this region are actually anything but homogenous. At the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island, the vineyards of Marlborough benefit from well-draining, stony soils, a dry, sunny climate and wide temperature fluctuations between day and night, a phenomenon that supports a perfect balance between berry ripeness and acidity.

The region’s king variety, Sauvignon blanc, is beloved for its pungent, aromatic character with notes of exotic tropical fruit, freshly cut grass and green bell pepper along with a refreshing streak of stony minerality. These wines are made in a wide range of styles, and winemakers take advantage of various clones, vineyard sites, fermentation styles, lees-stirring and aging regimens to differentiate their bottlings, one from one another.

Also produced successfully here are fruit-forward Pinot noirs (especially where soils are clay-rich), elegant Riesling, Pinot gris and Gewürztraminer.
