    Hastwell and Lightfoot, Australia
We are grape growers producing the very best fruit we can for McLaren Vale winemakers. As we see it, without quality grapes there can be no great wines. But there is only one way to judge whether you are producing fruit of good flavour, and that obviously is by taking it through to the bottled product. So the small parcels of wine we make each year are in many respects our quality assessment programme, checking that our pruning methods, trellis system, water and fertiliser regimes are all working to produce grapes of superior quality. Our vineyard located on the sandy northern slopes of the McLaren vale is predominately planted to the major varieties – Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. However more recently we have planted 2 varieties new to Australia which suit well with our climate and soil type – Viognier and Tempranillo. We will be watching their development like a mother waiting the birth of a child. Our current wines are only 2, a Cabernet Sauvignon & Cabernet Franc blend and a straight Shiraz. Both made in very limited quantities but to our great joy now being enjoyed in Germany, New Zealand and U.S.A. as well as by our direct mail customers in Australia. Our objective is to stay small and continue to produce wines we believe are best described as “ Wines made for Eating”.

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.

Known for opulent red wines with intense power and concentration, McLaren Vale is home to perhaps the most “classic” style of Australian Shiraz. Vinified on its own or in Rhône Blends, these hot-climate wines are deeply colored and high in extract with signature hints of dark chocolate and licorice. Cabernet Sauvignon is also produced in a similar style.

Whites, often made from Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc tend to be opulent and full of tropical, stone and citrus fruit.
