Winemaker Notes

A complex and layered expression of deliciously dark fruit intermingled with currant and raw cacao. Blackberry and cherry collide with hints of cola and espresso. Eighty percent of the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon comes from Broken Rock Ranch vineyard. With high drainage and low fertility soil on the eastern ridge of Napa Valley at the foot of Atlas Peak, Broken Rock consistently produces wines of unusual intensity and concentration.

Another of the producer's 100% varietal wines, this comes from two head-turning sites: Broken Rock Ranch at the foot of Atlas Peak, and Beckstoffer Las Piedras. The two marry well, offering sizable tannin and power atop complex layers of leather, cedar, pencil lead and coffee. Soft, integrated oak makes the wine enjoyable now, while its structure suggests further time in bottle, too. Drink now through 2021.

A red with a pretty density of ripe fruit and velvety tannins. Full body, solid tension and a flavorful finish. The finish is exciting.

The beautiful 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon (95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc) has a deep ruby/purple color and a sweet nose of spring flowers, blueberry and blackcurrant fruit. On the palate the wine is medium to full-bodied, pure, lush and impressive. This is a nice surprise from a winery I had not previously experienced. Drink it over the next 10-15 years.

Guarachi Family Wines, California
Guarachi Family Wines Winery Video

When Alex Guarachi came to the United States in the 1970s, he noticed that Chilean wine was not available. He vowed to change this and was one of the first importers to introduce South American wine to the American public. Twenty-five years of serving as the founder and president of TGIC Importers–the leading American importer of South American wine –Alex Guarachi decided bring the passion and spirit of his own cultural experience to your dinner table. Today, the Guarachi Family introduces you to the finest from their hearts and their homeland in California.

After a quarter century of tasting, judging and assisting in the production of wines for other wineries, Alex finally realized a lifelong dream of producing his own wines with the inaugural bottling of three Guarachi Family Wines: Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. These bold, rich and stylish bottles come from prominent vineyards and appellations in Sonoma and Napa counties. The wines were created with the help of one of Alex's close friends: internationally-renowned winemaker, Paul Hobbs. After many years marketing and assisting in the production of fine wine from all over the world, Alex Guarachi created a brand to carry his own family name and reflect only the highest quality Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon in California. Guarachi Family Wines is sourced from micro-lots within California’s most premier appellations – Sonoma Coast and Napa Valley.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
