    Winemaker Notes

Domaine Grand Archer 1999 White Riesling - Extremely limited, this wine is incredibly crisp in character, while a touch of residual sugar gives it a rich mouthfeel and smooth finish. A classic wine for food, especially in the warm months of summer, this fresh, young wine is meant to be enjoyed within two years of release.

Richard Arrowood blends GRAND ARCHER varietals from selected lots very similar to those used in his ultra-premium Arrowood wines. His goal is to ensure that GRAND ARCHER'S oak aged, varietally-true flavors compare favorably with wines selling for twice the price. All of the GRAND ARCHER wines are made in limited quantities, another key to continued quality and consistency. The result is a brand that combines the high quality standards of Arrowood Winery with a great value.

Riesling possesses a remarkable ability to reflect the character of wherever it is grown while still maintaining its identity. A regal variety of incredible purity and precision, this versatile grape can be just as enjoyable dry or sweet, young or old, still or sparkling and can age longer than nearly any other white variety. Somm Secret—Given how difficult it is to discern the level of sweetness in a Riesling from the label, here are some clues to find the dry ones. First, look for the world “trocken.” (“Halbtrocken” or “feinherb” mean off-dry.) Also a higher abv usually indicates a drier Riesling.

Home to a diverse array of smaller AVAs with varied microclimates and soil types, Sonoma County has something for every wine lover. Physically twice as large as Napa Valley, the region only produces about half the amount of wine but boasts both tremendous quality and variety. With its laid-back atmosphere and down-to-earth attitude, the wineries of Sonoma are appreciated by wine tourists for their friendliness and approachability. The entire county intends to become a 100% sustainable winegrowing region by 2019.

Sonoma County wines are produced with carefully selected grape varieties to reflect the best attributes of their sites—Dry Creek Valley’s consistent sunshine is ideal for Zinfandel, while the warm Alexander Valley is responsible for rich, voluptuous red wines like Cabernet Sauvignon. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are important throughout the county, most notably in the cooler AVAs of Russian River, Sonoma Coast and Carneros. Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Syrah have also found a firm footing here.
