Winemaker Notes
La Encantada vineyard, or the "charmed place", was planted by Richard Sanford in 2000. It is located on the western fringe of the Santa Rita Hills appellation, where its northern exposure makes it one of the coolest sites in the AVA. Foxen sources Dijon Pinot Noir clones from 3 distinctive terroirs at La Encantada.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2012 Pinot Noir La Encantada Vineyard Sta. Rita Hills is a beautiful effort that spent 16 months in 33% new French oak prior to being bottled un-fined and unfiltered. Showing notions of cherry pits, framboise, mint and spring flowers, it flows onto the palate with a rich, seamless texture, outstanding purity of fruit and a nicely focused, layered finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. Completely destemmed, it shows the prettier side the variety, and will shine for 5-7 years.

Thyme, wet slate and olallieberry reduction sauce lead the nose on this single-vineyard study from veteran winemakers Billy Wathen and Dick Dore. Its rich, fruit-forward mouthfeel features ripe raspberries, plum skin tartness and black tea tannins.

Bill Wathen and Dick Dore have been making wine together since 1985, when they founded Foxen Winery & Vineyard at the historic Rancho Tinaquaic in northern Santa Barbara County. Since that time, their dedication has remained the same - the creation of very small production, sustainably-farmed, vineyard-focused wines using a "minimalist" approach to winemaking. Foxen is named in memory of William Benjamin Foxen, an English sea captain and Dick's great-great grandfather, who came to Santa Barbara in the early 1800s and purchased the Rancho Tinaquaic. Captain Foxen adopted the distinctive "anchor" as his cattle brand, which became the trademark of the winery. Foxen is at home on the history Rancho Tinaquaic with its solar-powered winery, tasting room and 7200 "shack."
