Winemaker Notes

Deep cherry color. Very expressive, elegant and complex with ripe fruit, mineral notes, sweet spices, chocolate aromas and intense toasts. Powerful, tasty, round and very smooth. We find again black berries, mineral notes, chocolates with roasted aromas. Very long after taste. Ideal for red meats, lamb, roasted meat and strong cheeses

Nicely integrated black-cherry and blueberry aromas leading to a palate that has a punchy core of plum and blackberry flavor. The tannins pack an attractive punch. Plenty of spicy depth on the finish here.

The tiny production 2014 Ildefonso Toro is also all Tempranillo that spent 16 months in new French oak followed by a year in bottle before being released. It has more black and blue fruits, with subtle violet and chocolate notes, medium to full body, a stacked mid-palate, and a big finish. It’s a rich, powerful wine that has loads to love. It too should easily keep for 10-15 years.

The 2014 Finca Sobreño Ildefonso is a Tinta de Toro selection from 60-year-old vineyards fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in oak barrels for 18 months with rackings every six months. It's serious and combines power and elegance, it shows very good balance and freshness and fine-grained tannins. Great showing.

In the early 90's, a group of Rioja winemakers became interested in Toro, convinced that top class wines could be made from the local Tempranillo clone known as Tinta de Toro. The combination of Rioja know-how, modern technology, strict attention to detail and fine old-vines plantings has led Bodegas Sobreño to almost instant success in Spain and on the international scene. Bodegas Sobreño was founded in 1998. Just 7 years later, Bodegas Sobreño has become one of the best-known wineries in the region.

Notoriously food-friendly, long-lasting and Spain’s most widely planted grape, Tempranillo is the star variety of red wines from Rioja and Ribera del Duero. The Rioja terms Joven, Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva indicate both barrel and bottle time before release. Traditionally blended in Rioja with Garnacha, plus a bit of Mazuelo (Carignan) and Graciano, the Tempranillo in Ribera del Duero typically stands alone. Somm Secret—Tempranillo claims many different names depending on location. In Penedès, it is called Ull de Llebre and in Valdepeñas, goes by Cencibel. Known as Tinta Roriz in Portugal, Tempranillo plays an important role in Port wine.

Spain's remote, high elevation Spanish wine zone between the regions of Bierzo and Ribera del Duero produces intense, full-bodied reds made from Tempranillo, locally called Tinta de Toro. This local variant has adapted to the region’s climatic extremes and recognizing its potential, top producers from Ribera del Duero and Rioja have invested heavily in its vineyards.
