    Winemaker Notes

Family owned and operated by the Maranon Family since 1896, this wine is made from their old vines vineyards, aged 40+ years old. A traditional example of Rioja Alavesa aged in exclusively French oak for 6 months. The color is brilliant ruby with aromas of dry red fruits and minerality. The mouth feel is silky and seamless with sweet raspberry spice. To preserve the integrity and fruit character this wine is unfiltered. Sediment is natural.

    Finca Maranon, Spain
Founded in 1896, Bodegas y Vinedos Andrea Maranon has been one of the most well respected estates in Rioja Alavesa since its founding. In its 5th generation of leadership, Andrea Maranon leads the winery’s direction today. The Maranon estate is known for its purist winemaking and old vines vineyards. Their vineyards still maintain one of the most symbolic images of the region, the traditional Guardavinas, pictured on the Finca Maranon label. Historically they were used when vineyard workers needed to take shelter during a major storm. The estate produces exclusively the four primary indigenous varieties: Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuelo and Viura. The winery practices organic viticulture.

Hailed as the star red variety in Spain’s most celebrated wine region, Tempranillo from Rioja, or simply labeled, “Rioja,” produces elegant wines with complex notes of red and black fruit, crushed rock, leather, toast and tobacco, whose best examples are fully capable of decades of improvement in the cellar.

Rioja wines are typically a blend of fruit from its three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental, although specific sub-region (zonas), village (municipios) and vineyard (viñedo singular) wines can now be labeled. Rioja Alta and Alavesa, at the highest elevations, are considered to be the source of the brightest, most elegant fruit, while grapes from the warmer and drier, Rioja Oriental, produce wines with deep color, great body and richness.
