Winemaker Notes

In the spirit of celebrating people who play by their own rules, we’re proud to partner with street artist Faust New York for the second year to bring our two art forms together and present a new limited-edition magnum of 2016 Faust Cabernet.

The 2016 Faust Cabernet is a blend of our estate vineyards in Coombsville and Rutherford and mountain sourcing in Atlas Peak, Mount Veeder and Howell Mountain. Intense yet fresh with juicy blue and black notes. Notes of dark chocolate and dried herbs seduce the palate while silky tannins and lifting acidity leads to a layered and lingering finish.

Seamlessly blending calligraphy, graffiti and design, Faust New York’s unique aesthetic resonates with a broad audience around the globe. Faust’s murals are peppered throughout the streets of New York, while his signature pieces adorn walls from Hong Kong to Moscow.

This is firm and juicy yet generous and fruity at the same time. Has a plush and wild feel. Extremely savory. Flavorful finish. Drink now or hold.

Lush and inviting, with cassis, creamed plum and boysenberry puree flavors gliding through on a very polished structure, while anise, mocha and tobacco accents check in on the finish. A seductive style. Drink now through 2028.

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is blended of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller portions of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, aged for 19 months in 30% new French oak. The core of the fruit comes from the Coombsville estate blended with some mountain and valley floor fruit from elsewhere. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it offers a beautiful core of ripe blackcurrants, blackberries and lavender with nuances of cedar chest, pencil lead and camphor plus a waft of tilled soil. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a nice, firm backbone of ripe, grainy tannins and well-played freshness delivering a long, vibrant finish.

COMMENTARY: Over the last several years, Faust has been gaining traction in the marketplace. The 2016 Faust Cabernet Sauvignon is an excellent example of a sturdy, full-bodied Napa Cab. TASTING NOTES: This wine is well-built, firm and redolent with sweet tannins. Its aromas and flavors of black fruit, oak, and a shading of dust make a good pairing partner with grilled meats. (Tasted: October 26, 2018, San Francisco, CA)

This is a tremendous value for the quality—a youthful tightly wound wine that's still thick and tannic, with a heavy thread of leather, gunpowder and oak. Savory and substantial, it has secondary seasonings of sage and cedar that contrast well against black currant and cherry.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
