Winemaker Notes

"Vigna Il Corto" is located on the south-eastern slope of the property, on a soil of medium consistence rich in stone, and is composed by 90% Sangiovese Toscano and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon vines. Because of the particular characteristics of this vineyard, it is vinified by itself as "cru" since 1993.

Deep ruby red color; intense and complex bouquet, with berry and cherry aromas and flavors, and well-integrated hints of vanilla. On the palate, it is full-bodied, with velvety ripe tannins, and a long finish.

A great match with roasted meats, stewed meats, game and aged cheeses perfectly.

The Masi family’s stony Il Corto vineyard is planted to sangiovese with ten percent cabernet sauvignon, and the family harvests and ferments the fruit together, then ages the wine for 18 months in French oak barrels (half new). The 2017 shows lots of black spice and licorice before opening to reveal bright flavors of red cherry and black currant that mingle harmoniously with the dark spice tones. The tannins are chewy and dense without closing off the fruit, while ample alcohol warms the finish. This calls for hearty food, like pasta in a meaty ragù.

Fattoria di Basciano Winery Image
Located in the town of Rufina, Fattoria di Basciano is the estate owned by the Masi family since the beginning of 1900. It is located in the heart of the Chianti Rufina area, on the top of a hill overlooking the Argomenna Valley on one side, and the right bank of the Sieve river on the other. In the last fifteen years the estate has been engaged in a program of research and experimentation in the vineyards to reach even higher quality levels. By consistently investing, planting new vineyards, and building a new winery for the vinification and barrel ageing, Basciano continues to evolve and reach new heights.

Legendary in Italy for its Renaissance art and striking landscape, Tuscany is also home to many of the country’s best red wines. Sangiovese reigns supreme here, as either the single varietal, or a dominant player, in almost all of Tuscany’s best.

A remarkable Chianti, named for its region of origin, will have a bright acidity, supple tannins and plenty of cherry fruit character. From the hills and valleys surrounding the medieval village of Montalcino, come the distinguished and age-worthy wines based on Brunello (Sangiovese). Earning global acclaim since the 1970s, the Tuscan Blends are composed solely of international grape varieties or a mix of international and Sangiovese. The wine called Vine Nobile di Montepulciano, composed of Prognolo Gentile (Sangiovese) and is recognized both for finesse and power.
