Winemaker Notes

A classic expression of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, showing off the best of each growing region, this vintage shows off aromas and flavors of dark fruit led by blackberry, dark raspberry and black cherry with hints of oak spice. The wine is well balanced with great structural integrity, a solid acid backbone and a weighty yet elegant and lingering finish. Sure to continue gaining complexity and revealing additional character with age, the wine is suitable for immediate enjoyment or cellaring for another two decades.

Professional Ratings

This is a lush and exuberant red with blackberry and blackcurrant character and pine-needle and licorice undertones. Full body and firm, velvety tannins. Lovely, rich fruit.
  • 93
The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and includes fruit from Oakville, Calistoga, St. Helena, Rutherford and Coombsville, aged for 20 months inn 75% new French oak. Very deep purple-black in color, it leaps from the glass with exuberant crushed blackcurrants, wild blueberries and crushed black cherries with touches of cedar, menthol, violets and smoked meats. Full, firmly structured and with ripe, grainy tannins and a lively line, it is jam-packed with youthful, vibrant black fruits, finishing very long with an herbal lift.

Brooding in dense blackberry, black cherry and currant, this is a robust red, burly in tannin and oak that shows a solid backbone of structural power. Lingering elements of tobacco and baking spice ride along the finish leaving a memorable impression.

Etude Winery Video

What began thirty years ago as a philosophical state of mind is now a state-of-the-art winemaking facility where the ancient art of winemaking is pursued with a singular passion.

Etude Wines is dedicated to the study of craft of winegrowing. In classical music, an etude is a composition with a technical focus that allows the musician to practice a particular technique. Similarly, Etude wines are the product of deliberate concentration on the instructive variables of the craft. The end game is not edification alone, but rather the wine itself as a source of enjoyment.

Working together in this oenological quest for perfection are current winemaker Jon Priest and Ast. Winemaker Rob Fischer. They transform the very finest Carneros and Napa Valley grapes into world-class wines sought out by the most discriminating wine lovers. In addition to its widely acclaimed Carneros Pinot Noir and legendary Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Etude has also developed a loyal following for Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Merlot and Pinots from the most sought after AVAs around the world.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
