Winemaker Notes

Not widely known, but in days of yore, growers in Burgundy often confused Pinot Blanc with Chardonnay, which it resembles, propagating it and blending it for a classic white Burgundy. In 2013, we decided to give this a whirl, blending a small portion of Pinot Blanc to our Chardonnay. It added such a wonderful dimension to the wine, we decided to carry on with the practice. Our 2015 Chardonnay has intriguing aromatics of golden apples, citrus blossoms, melon, Bartlett pears, clay, and white flowers. It is well balanced, clean and crisp on the palate with bright flavors of stone fruit, citrus, crèmebrûlée, and quince. This wine is layered with complex flavors that are lifted by vibrant acidity leading to a long, refreshing finish with just a hint of French oak. This wine pairs well with many seafood or fowl dishes as well as rich cheeses. Some of our favorite suggestions are chicken in a morel cream sauce or Époisses

COMMENTARY: While the 2015 Elyse Chardonnay is riding the peak of its maturity, it is drinking pretty well. TASTING NOTES: This wine is ready. Pair its aromas and flavors of tropical, ripe fruit and oak with grilled chicken in brown butter. (Tasted: October 23, 2019, San Francisco, CA)

Elyse Winery Image
In 1983, Nancy and Ray arrived in California from Cape Cod to fulfill Ray’s dream of making wine and Nancy’s taste for adventure. After working harvest at Mt. Eden Winery in Saratoga, they moved to Napa Valley and became innkeepers for a bed &breakfast. Ray then spent formative time at Tonella Vineyard Management, where he gained philosophical perspective and practical knowledge working in the vineyards. Ray’s nine year tenure at Whitehall Lane Winery under the tutelage of Art Finkelstein first as a cellar worker and then as head winemaker honed his skills in the art of blending and was the inspiration for Ray’s winemaking style today.

In 1987, Ray & Nancy started Elyse Winery with 286 cases of Zinfandel from the Morisoli Vineyard, which is still a cornerstone vineyard source for the winery. After a decade of nomadic winemaking at various custom crush facilities, in 1997 they purchased a small winery and vineyard on Hoffman Lane, the home of Elyse Winery and tasting room.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

Perhaps the most historically significant appellation in Sonoma County, the Sonoma Valley is home to both Buena Vista winery, California's oldest commercial winery, and Gundlach Bundschu winery, California's oldest family-run winery.

It is also one of the more geologically and climactically diverse districts. The valley includes and overlaps four distinct Sonoma County sub-appellations, including Carneros, Moon Mountain District, Sonoma Mountain and Bennett Valley. With mountains, benchlands, plains, abundant sunshine and the cooling effects of the nearby Pacific, this appellation can successfully produce a wide range of grape varieties. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Gewürztraminer, and most notably, Zinfandel all thrive here. Ancient Zinfandel vines over 100 years old produce small crops of concentrated, spicy fruit, which in turn make some of the Valley's most unique wines. These can also be made as “field blends” (wines made from a mix of grape varieties grown in the same vineyard) along with Petite Sirah, Carignan and Alicante Bouschet.
