    Somm Note

    Winemaker Notes

Saturated, deep purple hues share rich aromas of ripe black fruit, baking spice, black tea, earth and leather. A lush and succulent palate with pronounced acidity mitigates the medium-dry tannins with a generous finish.

Todd Gottula and Erin Brooks of Ernest Vineyards also own and operate a third label: Edaphos (pronounced ee-dah-fos) which means “base,” “ground,” and “soil” in Greek; they felt it was a good expression of their attitude behind this winemaking. They consider this part of their business to be their “laboratory,” the place where they make small-lot wines that incorporate new and exciting approaches to winemaking with different styles and off-beat grape varietals. Sometimes they also call it their “sandbox.” The Edaphos strategy enables them to explore, experiment, and apply some of the lessons they learn to wines they make under their other labels. It also allows them to produce different wines whenever they feel like making them.

Friendly and approachable, Barbera produces wines in a wide range of styles, from youthful, fresh and fruity to serious, structured and age-worthy. Piedmont is the most famous source of Barbera; those from Asti and Alba garner the most praise. Barbera actually can adapt to many climates and enjoys success in some New World regions. Somm Secret—In the past it wasn’t common or even accepted to age Barbera in oak but today both styles—oaked and unoaked—abound and in fact most Piedmontese producers today produce both styles.

Covering the western slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains, facing the city of Sonoma, Moon Mountain District is one of Sonoma’s newest sub-appellations. Here the well-drained, red volcanic and ash soils produce hauntingly intense red wines, mainly from Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varieties.
