Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Nice red ruby color. The nose is expressive and intense: a lot of fruit such as raspberries, cherries, blackberries and blueberries all mixed together. The palate is juicy, full, and crispy, with a lovely fresh mineral character at the end.

This village-level Morey is from two, roughly equal-sized parcels at the top of the slope; one is in Les Larrets, the other in En la Rue de Vergy. Yields were only 20 hl/ha due to the organic conversion of the vineyards, and the wine shows a pleasantly forward, plummy fruit on the nose, plenty of density and length. Aged in 30% new casks, as director Jacques Devauges notes, this is 'an energetic, tonic wine'.

Aromas of smoky berry fruit, orange rind, raw cocoa and warm spices introduce the 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis Village, a medium to full-bodied, bright and vibrant wine with fine depth at the core, powdery tannins, tangy acids and good length on the finish. This is as good a communal bottling as I can remember tasting at this estate.

An opulent, almost chunky red, whose shoulders support black cherry, blackberry and plum flavors, with details of violet, earth and oak spice. Balanced and long.

At the heart and the estate visitors will find… the eponymous Clos. There are also two plots of the Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru and four plots of the Morey-Saint-Denis village, all of them planted with Pinot noir. With the acquisition of a few "ouvrees" of Chardonnay of two "Climats" classified as Premier Cru in Puligny-Montrachet, les Folatieres and the Clos du Cailleret, the estate is now complete.

The estate also boasts a castle and its ancient cellar, dating back to the seventeenth century, and of one of the most beautiful gardens of the region. The garden features a three hundred year old cedar as well as orchids and a collection of roses. This classical beauty of the grounds contribute heavily to the wine’s aesthetic qualities.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”

While Morey-St-Denis of Burgundy might not get the same attention as its neighbors, Gevrey-Chambertin to the north and Chambolle-Musigny to the south, there is no reason why it shouldn’t. The same line of limestone runs from the Combe de Lavaux in Gevrey—all the way through Morey—ending in Chambolle.

There are four grand cru vineyards, moving southwards from the border with Gevrey-Chambertin: Clos de la Roche, Clos St-Denis, Clos des Lambrays, Clos de Tart and a small segment of Bonnes-Mares overlapping from Chambolle. Clos de la Roche is probably the finest vineyard, giving wines of true depth, body, and sturdiness for the long haul than most other vineyards.

Pinot Noir from Morey-St-Denis is known for its deep red cherry, blackcurrant and blueberry fruit. Aromas of spice, licorice and purple flowers are present in the wines’ youth, evolving to forest and game as the wine ages.
