Winemaker Notes

The Clos de Mosny combines remarkable density and richness with precision deriving from the wine’s minerality and focused acidity. It can be or aged for many years which will bring out the nuances of a great dry Chenin Blanc.

When Jacky Blot purchased this vineyard from Monmousseau in 2010, he converted it to organic farming. It’s a 37-acre monopole, with vines 30 to 50 years old. This gets the same fermentation in oak as the Clos Michet (above) and shows it a little more overtly in this vintage, with the kind of smoky, flint-like reduction that collectors covet in their favorite Burgundies. Bottle age should transform that reductive stink to something more floral—time in a decanter does that for now. It’s worth waiting for, based on the silken texture alone.

Domaine de la Taille Aux Loups Jean-Philippe Blot and His Father Jacky Winery Image
A new star has emerged in the heart of the Loire Valley: he is Jacky Blot of Domaine de la Taille aux Loups, in Montlouis and Vouvray. Montlouis is located on the southern bank of the Loire, opposite Vouvray. Blot, originally a Loire wine broker by profession, acquired about 8 hectares of 50-75 year old vines in 1989. These prized, ancient parcels belonged to families that could no longer continue to cultivate the vines and so entrusted them to Blot and his team. Blot brought a passion and exacting determination to make wines of only the highest quality, well beyond the norm of the day. Now more than 25 years on, Blot is the acknowledged pioneer of the region and is credited with having taken Chenin Blanc to unprecedented heights of quality.

Unquestionably one of the most diverse grape varieties, Chenin Blanc can do it all. It shines in every style from bone dry to unctuously sweet, oaked or unoaked, still or sparkling and even as the base for fortified wines and spirits. Perhaps Chenin Blanc’s greatest asset is its ever-present acidity, maintained even under warm growing conditions. Somm Secret—Landing in South Africa in the mid 1800s, today the country has double the acreage of Chenin Blanc planted compared to France. There is also a new wave of dedicated producers committed to restoring old Chenin vines.

On the south bank of the Loire River, below Vouvray, Montlouis produces all styles of Chenin blanc from bone dry, off-dry, sweet, oak aged and even the sparkling Montlouis Mousseux and Montlouis Pétillant Naturel. Soils here are lighter and sandier compared to Vouvray.
