Winemaker Notes

Chateau de Lancyre is arguably the best domaine in the Languedoc's top wine district, Pic St. Loup. The Lancyre Roussanne offers aromas of peaches and country hay on the nose, with just a touch of spearmint and honey. It is big, bold and crisp, with great freshness on the palate. Enjoy this unoaked wine on its own or with poultry, creamy pasta dishes, or seafood (especially sole or fried calamari). 90% Roussanne, 10% Viognier.

...scented with fennel, mint, pear, Persian melon, and diverse floral perfume, all of which follow on a luscious, silken palate, to which finishing notes of cress, white pepper, pear pip, and crushed stone lend invigoratingly incisive, tactile counterpoint....There are a lot of experiments in the Languedoc and Roussillon with Roussanne and Viognier (of which this bottling always contains a bit), but few if any have proven more consistently compelling than Lancyre’s, and none I know has demonstrated remotely its track record...

Full and silky in body but also charmingly crisp, Roussanne is native to the Rhône Valley of France. It is responsible for some of the finest Northern Rhône white wines. Roussanne adds richness and acidity to Marsanne’s soft, fruitiness, making age worthy and highly respected whites. Somm Secret—Roussanne takes its name from the French word, roux, meaning rouge or red because of the berry’s pink glow. In California, virtually all of the 339 acres of Roussanne come from true clones brought over by Tablas Creek and John Alban.

An extensive appellation producing a diverse selection of good quality and great values, Languedoc spans the Mediterranean coast from the Pyrenees mountains of Roussillon all the way to the Rhône Valley. Languedoc’s terrain is generally flat coastal plains, with a warm Mediterranean climate and frequent risk of drought.

Virtually every style of wine is made in this expansive region. Most dry wines are blends with varietal choice strongly influenced by the neighboring Rhône Valley. For reds and rosés, the primary grapes include Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault and Mourvèdre. White varieties include Grenache Blanc, Muscat, Ugni Blanc, Vermentino, Macabéo, Clairette, Piquepoul and Bourbelenc.

International varieties are also planted in large numbers here, in particular Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The key region for sparkling wines here is Limoux, where Blanquette de Limoux is believed to have been the first sparkling wine made in France, even before Champagne. Crémant de Limoux is produced in a more modern style.
