Winemaker Notes

Stylistically the 2013s are exceptionally fresh and pure with lovely transparency. This wine will both age well yet should be reasonably accessible young as the tannins are dense but quite fine.

The colour has held up well though starting to become a more sombre red. The bouquet is excellent, and there is a surprising depth of fruit, very youthful, good acidity, offering a delicious medium concentrated glass of maturing red wine, though not quite providing a velvet touch, nor filling the mid palate, which points can be ascribed to the vintage rather than the vigneron.

The 2013 Vosne-Romanée Champs Perdrix, located at the upper contours above La Romanée and Romanée-Conti, is matured in 20% new oak, has an attractive, expressive bouquet tinged with maraschino cherries and orange sorbet scents. The palate is medium-bodied with taut tannins, crisp acidity, an appreciable sense of transparency, lilting on the finish. Though there is not enormous substance here, this will be a delight to drink over the next decade. Range: 88-91

The origins of the Perrot-Minot estate go back to the middle of the 19th century, when the vines of the Sigaut (Chambolle-Musigny) and Morizot (Morey-Saint Denis) families were brought together in the heritage of Léonie Sigaut, wife and widow of Alexandre Morizot.

It wasn't until the 1960's that the estate would become known as Perrot-Minot. The family members running the estate at that time decided to adhere to the tradition of quality and innovation which had already prevailed with the two previous generations. Christophe Perrot-Minot became manager in 1993. His previous experience as a wine broker for seven years had brought him a deep and broad knowledge of the winegrower's trade. He also brought convictions about what constitutes a great wine and how to produce it. Convictions that he was to put into practice by adhering, like the three generations who preceded him, to that grand tradition of putting excellence and innovation at the very heart of work. Rethinking, modernizing the estate, and perfecting ever further the quality of the wines, while preparing the continuation of a story which now goes back nearly two centuries.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”

This is the village for the most die-hard Burgundy fanatics. Vosne-Romanée has for many hundreds of years been the source of the most sought-after Pinot Noir in Burgundy. The village claims six Grands Crus—and some of the most famous at that—but in other villages where owners manage tiny parcels or a few rows of any one vineyard, monopolies dominate the Grands Crus of Vosne-Romanee.

Of these monopolies, Domaine Romanee-Conti (DRC) reigns supreme, claiming not only more total vineyard area than any other producer, but outright owning the entirety of two of the Grands Crus and a majority of two others. In its full possession are naturally Romanée-Conti, as well as La Tâche. DRC also owns most of Richebourg and Romanée-St-Vivant. The final two, La Grande Rue and La Romanée are completely owned by other other produers: François Lamarche and Comte Liger Belair, respectively.

While one could spend a lifetime on the puzzles of land ownership in Burgundy, the point is that Vosne-Romanee contains the most valuable pieces of vineyard real estate in the world. Pinot Noir from any of its vineyards—especially from within its 27ha of Grand Cru or 58 ha of Premier Cru land—is going to rank among the best.

The most outstanding wines from this village have everything: finesse and elegance coupled with the body and sturdiness for incredibly long aging ability. They are intensely floral and exotically spiced. Beautifully ripe, complex and ephemeral throughout, they are robust, yet fine-grained in texture. These wines will stay gorgeous for the long haul.
