Distinctly citrussy aromas of lemon and lime zest, complicated smoke nuances. Sappy and palate-saturating with a depth that leaves a strong saline impression.

COMMENTARY: The 2017 Domaine Marc Roy Marsannay shows the purity of Chardonnay in Burgundy. TASTING NOTES: This wine is all about the fruit. Its aromas and flavors highlight ripe core fruit, a trace of minerality, and plenty of earth. Pair it with roast chicken accented with savory spices. (Tasted: March 11, 2019, San Francisco, CA)

Domaine Marc Roy Alexandrine Roy Winery Image
Alexandrine Roy is the 4th generation of the Roy family to farm her holdings in Gevrey-Chambertin and Marsannay. This is a tiny domaine of just four hectares that is meticulously cared for as if it was a personal garden. Alexandrine is a true farmer, consistently ploughing the soils of her old- vine vineyards (many of which are more than 100 years old) to allow the roots to dig deep into the shallow limestone. The resulting wines from these delicately cared for plots show a lovely purity and elegance that have garnered the domaine praise from around the world. Through minimal intervention and extraction, Alexandrine allows her old vines to express themselves with immense depth of flavor and clarity. For the uninitiated – and there seem to be fewer and fewer each year – Burgundy rarely is as pristine, or downright delicious, than with the extraordinary wines of Alexandrine Roy.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

Perched up in the northernmost position in the Côte de Nuits, Marsannay is the only appellation village of Burgundy to produce classified wines of all three colors: red, white— and rosé. The official Rosé de Marsannay earned its high reputation in the early 1900s.

Its reds, made of Pinot Noir, burst with red and black fruit and are consistently long on the palate. Chardonnays from Marsannay are charming, floral and full of citrus fruit and mineral. Top Marsannay vineyards include Clos du Roy and Les Longeroies.
