Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

When young, it is characterized by its raspberry red to deep garnet color. Its full-bodied bouquet is reminiscent of black fruit, liquorice, spices, with woody and leather hints. On the palate, melted wood. Dominate aromas of black fruit, truffle, anise and cherry. The intense, powerful and precise tannins of this Grand Cru accompany a long, unctuous finish.

The powerful, full-bodied Clos de Vougeot is perfect with meat such as pheasant, hare with the royal (hare in red wine) and ripened cheeses such as Epoisses and Camembert farmer.

The 2014 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, which is completely destemmed, has a sweet, almost pastille-like bouquet with maraschino cherry, blueberry and violet notes, not unlike a Chambolle Amoureuses in some ways. I like the exuberance displayed here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple black fruit, the oak just a little dominating towards the finish although there is decent depth and persistence in place. Give it 4-5 years in bottle.

A smoky, charry style, with flavors of ripe cherry and blackberry. This is burly, showing a lot of oak and tannins today, but remains impressive nonetheless. Best from 2021 through 2035. 10 cases imported.

Five generations have been running the Domaine for 163 years, Caroline and Nicolas, Christine and Philippe's children represent the sixth. In 1850, Jean-Baptiste Laroze started a vineyard operation in Gevrey Chambertin. He was later succeeded by Felix LarozeAROZE.

In 1919, Suzanne, the daughter of Félix, married Alexandre Drouhin, who owned vines in Chambolle Musigny and the estate was henceforth called Drouhin-Laroze. The Estate is currently run by Philippe and Christine Drouhin, assisted by their children Caroline and Nicolas.

Each successive generation continued to develop the Estate with the sole objective of investing in hillside vineyards, which was a visionary and risky choice. At the time, those vineyards were already very expensive and not very productive. The bet paid off and today, thanks to the sacrifices and risk-taking of the previous generations, the 11.50 hectare Estate is one of the most prestigious in terms of diversity, quality and the surface area of its appellations.
