    Winemaker Notes

This 46 acres vineyard grows on a steep slope in the middle of a hillside. The shallow, calcareous brown soil is mixed with pebbles and clay loams over hard limestone. The 40 years old vines produce balanced and concentrated grapes.

The name “Les Hauts Pruliers” originates from wild plum trees with blue bays which tannins cling to the gums. This wine is therefore a sensual and lively wine, with a rather masculine personality, which does not leave the amateurs indifferent. Its power gives it an excellent aging potential. With age, it will develop aromas of dried prunes.

This is an ideal pairing wine for regional dishes in sauce, such as ham and game meat. Its tannic character adapts to a full-bodied and spicy cuisine.

Created in 1955 by Daniel Rion, this family-owned estate began with only two hectares of vines located in the commune of Vosne Romanee, left to Daniel by his paternal grandfather. Until 1978, Daniel sold his wine to Burgundian negociants. In the late seventies, his sons joined the business, bringing new parcels of vines with them. A new winery was built with a larger cellar and a tasting room. Today, the domaine consists of eighteen hectares of vineyards with eighteen appellations in six villages of the Cote des Nuits and the Hautes-Cotes: Premeaux, Nuits Saint Georges, Vosne Romanee, Chambolle Musigny, Vougeot and Marey-les-Fussey.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”

Inhabiting the bottom end of the northern half of the Côte d’Or, Nuits-St-Georges is a busy, market-driven town and home to many of Burgundy’s negociants. It is also the largest town in the Côte d’Or after Beaune and contributes "nuits" to the name of Côte de Nuits (i.e., the northern half of the Côte d’Or).

The appellation itself is divided into two parts, where in the north it directly borders Vosne-Romanée, the southerly end is the commune of Prémeaux. There are no Grands Crus in this village, though it does have a large number of Premiers Crus.

The best Nuits-St-Georges Pinot Noir are layered with cherry, plum, underbrush and sandalwood. The fruit is sweet, the wine energetic, and the finish long and lush.
