The name Clavel is associated with vines in Languedoc for generations. The current generations continue to perpetuate the family history, in the tradition of Jean Clavel, wine historian and creator of the AOC Coteaux du Languedoc. The vineyard of 33 hectares covers four remarkable featured territories of the Languedoc appellation: Pic Saint Loup, of course, but also Gres de Montpellier, The Mejanelle and Saint Christol. <> Domaine Clavel is conducted using organic farming practiced (more effort, listening and risks) with deep concern for the respect of nature. Domaine Clavel is internationally recognized and produced racy wines that do not deny their origins, those of a vineyard in history two millennia.

Full-figured and charmingly floral, Viognier is one of the most important white grapes of the northern Rhône where it is used both to produce single varietal wines and as an important blending grape. Look for great New World examples from California, Oregon, Washington and cooler parts of Australia. Somm Secret—Viognier plays a surprisingly important role in the red wines of Côte Rôtie in the northern Rhône. About 5% Viognier is typically co-fermented with the Syrah in order to stabilize the color, and as an added benefit, add a subtle perfume.

Typically thought of as a baby Chateâuneuf-du-Pape, the term Côtes du Rhône actually doesn’t merely apply to the flatter outskirts of the major southern Rhône appellations, it also includes the fringes of well-respected northern Rhône appellations. White wines can be produced under the appellation name, but very little is actually made.

The region offers some of the best values in France and even some first-rate and age-worthy reds. Red wine varieties include most of the Chateâuneuf-du-Pape varieties like Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsault, and Counoise, as well as Carignan. White grapes grown include Grenache blanc, Roussanne and Viognier, among others.
