    Somm Note

    Winemaker Notes

Soft, silky aromas of black cherry and blackberry mix with a stony tang on the nose; the mouth is medium-bodied yet very ripe and lush, suggesting stewed wild strawberries, cherry compote and baking spices. Lush and long and very captivating.

Brigitte Berthelemot is a passionate wine lover who all her life dreamed of owning a winemaking estate. Fate and luck sometimes do conspire, and Berthelemot was able to fulfill her dream through the acquisition of some of Burgundy's finest old-vine terroirs.

The retirement of two great winemakers, Yves Darviot and Jean Garaudet, allowed the winemaking torch to be passed from one generation to another. Berthelemot purchased their vineyards, and following the construction of a state-of-the-art winery in Meursault, is continuing their great work.

Marc Cugney, a winemaker with decades of experience in Beaune and New Zealand, is the estate winemaker.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”
