Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Medium ruby in color. Notes of currants, ripe plum, pomegranate and huckleberry are prominent in the nose along with new, finely oiled leather and nuances of exotic dried mushrooms. This wine possesses a firm body with soft, silky tannins and a long, lingering finish.

Pure, rich and layered, with tiers of blackberry, raspberry and wild berry flavors, shaded by notes of spice, anise and light oak. Finishes with enough tannic grip to keep the flavors lively. Grenache, Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Carignane and Merlot. Drink now through 2022.

Beyond the usual suspects, there are hundreds of red grape varieties grown throughout the world. Some are indigenous specialties capable of producing excellent single varietal wines, while others are better suited for use as blending grapes. Each has its own distinct viticultural characteristics, as well as aroma and flavor profiles, offering much to be discovered by the curious wine lover. In particular, Portugal and Italy are known for having a multitude of unique varieties but they can really be found in any region.

With a dry and mild climate cooled significantly by moist ocean fog and breezes, Santa Barbara County is a grape-grower’s dream. Part of the larger Central Coast appellation, Santa Barbara is home to Santa Maria Valley and Santa Ynez Valley. The conditions here provide an opportunity for nearly effortless production of high-quality cool-climate Central Coast wines. This is also the site of the 2004 film Sideways, which caused Pinot Noir’s popularity to skyrocket and brought new acclaim to the region.

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the stars of Santa Barbara, producing wines marked by racy acidity. Crisp Sauvignon Blanc and savory Syrah are also important. The region is home to many young and enthusiastic winemakers eager to experiment with less common varieties including Chenin Blanc, Grüner Veltliner, Trousseau Gris, Gamay and Cabernet Franc, making it an exciting area to watch.
