Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

This Cabernet Sauvignon is bold and full-bodied with layers of rich fruit character and subtle tannins. Ripe, dark fruit notes of blackberry and black currant combine with notes of toasty oak, vanilla and cocoa.

Pair Columbia Winery Cabernet Sauvignon alongside a hearty beef stew or savory pot roast and seasoned vegetables.

Professional Ratings

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon comes all from Red Mountain, which is a warmer region located in the heart of the Columbia Valley. Beautiful cassis and blackberry fruits as well as textbook graphite, chocolate, and lead pencil notes define the nose, and it's medium to full-bodied, with notable purity, some classic Red Mountain tannins, and outstanding length. It's a terrific Cabernet from this team that will keep for 15 years or so.

Columbia Winery, Washington
Columbia Winery Winery Image
Columbia Winery was the first premium winery in Washington and the first in the state to produce vineyard-designate wines. Columbia Winery was founded in 1962 by ten friends, six of whom were University of Washington professors. Originally known as Associated Vintners, the group was united in the belief that vines could survive the harsh Washington winters and that fine wine could be made in Washington state.

Having worked alongside founding winemaker and Master of Wine, David Lake, Kerry Norton now oversees the Columbia Winery winemaking, handcrafting Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah sourced from the Columbia and Yakima Valleys.

Washington produces so many exciting wines, and that definitely includes Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. With over 10,000 acres under vine, Cabernet Sauvignon is now the most widely-grown varietal in the state. Terrific examples hail from sub-appellations like Red Mountain, Wahluke Slope, Horse Heaven Hills and Walla Walla Valley. One of the fascinations of these Columbia Valley Cabs is that they so often seem to have one foot in the New World and one in the Old. Representing the former are characteristics like the ripe, forward fruit that results from long sunny days during the growing season (up to two hours longer than in much of California). Old World similarities include an undeniable brightness from acidity, as well as notes of herbs, graphite and a dusty, sometimes gravelly minerality.

Whether you’re looking for a budget bottle for everyday enjoyment, or a stellar, world-class wine with tremendous aging potential, Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon wines can deliver the goods! Among the many fine options are bottles from Columbia Crest, Chateau Ste. Michelle, L’ecole #41, Quilceda Creek and Leonetti.
