Winemaker Notes

Complex aromas of cherry, plum, mocha, licorice and smoke enhance this sweet, dense, ripe and harmonious Chateauneuf du Pape with a solid underlying structure. The 2000 Finishes with balanced, unaggressive, and ripe tannins.

Professional Ratings

The 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape reveals 14.6% alcohol, and is stylistically similar to the great 1990. The 2000 is open-knit and fat, with higher levels of glycerin as well as a more corpulent style than the structured, backward 2001. A deep ruby/purple color is followed by sweet, black cherry/kirsch liqueur-like notes presented in a voluptuous, full-throttle, intense style. It is already revealing such secondary nuances as pepper, garrigue, and truffles. Chewy, full-bodied, and moderately tannic, this cuvee is accessible, but not ready to drink. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025.

The 2000 Châteauneuf-du-Pape also showed beautifully and is fully mature. Garrigue, kirsch, forest floor, and mature red and black fruits give way to a silky, elegant red that still improves with time in the glass. I don't see this getting better since it’s fully mature, so I'd opt for drinking bottles over the coming 4-5 years.

Clos des Papes, France
Clos des Papes Winery Image
the "Clos des Papes" estate inclueds some forty scattered hectares, approximately 80 acres.
There are no fewer than 24 different plots of land, which include some of the most beautiful soils in the Chateauneuf vineyards. The geographical separation of our vineyards enables us to control ripeness at harvest time, since each sector does not necessarily reach the exact same stage at the same time. It also allows us to combine different varieties planted to the south. "Clos des Papes makes both red wines and white wines (10% of the production) for long-keeping, using traditional vinification and maturing. As I mentioned previously, our yields are deliberately low (an average of 28hl/hectare). and then undergo further strict sorting, to uphold our quality.
