Winemaker Notes

Those who prefer a young wine can begin to appreciate this very fine bottle in 2012 if it is transferred to a carafe three hours before serving; their reward will be the development of spicy, black fruit aromas typical of this growth. The wine's complexity is satisfyingly paradoxical: concentration and elegance, liveliness and softness. Just the color alone shows the deep, stylish garnet color typical of a great wine, and this impression is confirmed by its aromatic complexity. Beautifully long with a fresh finish.

For those who prefer more mature wines, Cantemerle 2009 can continue cellar aging for five, ten, or even fifteen years more; this will bring out its pedigree, with boldly expressive yet finely delicate aromas perfectly representative of its vintage and its terroir. But will these wine lovers be able to resist opening the bottle before then?

Blend: 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot, 6% Cabernet Franc

Gorgeous ripe fruit character, with loads of blueberries, blackberries and flowers. Full body, with velvety tannins and a fruity, fresh, grapefruit aftertaste. Really beautiful. Best ever from here. Best after 2018.

Very structured wine, with black currant fruit and dense acidity. The tannins are dark, firm, solid. This is a fine wine from Cantemerle, reveling in the richness of the vintage.

Readers looking for the more ethereal, elegant side of Bordeaux need search no further than Cantemerle, one of the estates in the very southern end of the Medoc. Dense ruby/purple (nearly opaque), this wine offers up notes of lead pencil shavings, spring flowers, raspberries and black cherries. The wine is ethereal, medium-bodied, and by no means a blockbuster, but long and intellectual. However, the tannins are present, and the wine is certainly capable of putting on weight with time in the bottle. Give it 3-4 years of bottle age and drink it over the following 25+ years.

This broad, fleshy style delivers toasty spice and tobacco notes up front, followed by dark cocoa, crushed plum and mulled blackberry fruit flavors. This really stretches out nicely in the glass, with alluring dark fruit and a velvety feel. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.

Chateau Cantemerle, France
Chateau Cantemerle Winery Image
Located in the southern part of Bordeaux Medoc peninsula near the villages of Macau and Ludon, Chateau Cantemerle, designated a great growth in the famous 1855 Classification, has deep gravel soil. Thanks to its unique terroir, Cantemerle produces complex, well-balanced, and refined wines.

After belonging to the Villeneuve (1579-1892) and Dubos (1892-1980) families, the chateau was acquired in 1981 by Groupe SMA, a large mutual insurance company in the construction and civil engineering sector. The estate's long history is reflected in the chateau's distinctive architecture and the magnificent grounds that surround it. Cantemerle exudes romantic charm and its wine has a magical feel to it!
