Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Wearing its youth in the form of a deep violet color, the 2016 Cenyth will evolve into the traditional ruby, garnet and amber hues of maturity. The nose reveals aromatics that are moderate in intensity and the palate is led by fresh fruits. Red plum and fresh blackberry are prominent – all balanced by a frame of French oak – and complemented by notes of roasted coffee and baking spices. Non-fruit aromas of fresh flowers, spearmint, and bay leaf add a brightness and lift to the nose. Acid and tannin dance together on the long finish, continuing the theme of youthful freshness and complexity

The 2016 Cenyth Red Wine Blend is blended of 50% Cabernet Franc, 33% Merlot and 17% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple colored, it opens with expressive baking spices, fragrant earth and vibrant red and black currant scents with touches of underbrush, pencil shavings and tar with a waft of charcuterie. Medium to full-bodied, it has a firm frame of grainy tannins and wonderful freshness framing the densely packed red and black fruit layers, finishing long.

Cenyth Winery Video

Cenyth wines represent Hélène’s Seillan mentorship with her father, world-renowned winemaker Pierre Seillan. Trained in the vineyards of France and drawn to the hills of Sonoma County, Hélène has worked alongside her father since the mid-2000s. Fueled by her inspiration, Hélène crafted the inaugural 2009 vintage of Cenyth; beginning with a red blend and later introduced her Rosé in 2014.

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.

Home to a diverse array of smaller AVAs with varied microclimates and soil types, Sonoma County has something for every wine lover. Physically twice as large as Napa Valley, the region only produces about half the amount of wine but boasts both tremendous quality and variety. With its laid-back atmosphere and down-to-earth attitude, the wineries of Sonoma are appreciated by wine tourists for their friendliness and approachability. The entire county intends to become a 100% sustainable winegrowing region by 2019.

Sonoma County wines are produced with carefully selected grape varieties to reflect the best attributes of their sites—Dry Creek Valley’s consistent sunshine is ideal for Zinfandel, while the warm Alexander Valley is responsible for rich, voluptuous red wines like Cabernet Sauvignon. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are important throughout the county, most notably in the cooler AVAs of Russian River, Sonoma Coast and Carneros. Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Syrah have also found a firm footing here.
