    Winemaker Notes

In the Carneros Ranch Chardonnay, you'll notice bright, crisp, and clean aromatics that burst from the glass. On the palate, green apple and citrus flavors combine with a touch of French oak and a soft, creamy texture that balances the acidity, drawing attention to the livelier flavors of the varietal.

The 2016 vintage was aged in a combination of tank and French oak barrels for 12 months with only a small percentage being new.

    Carneros Ranch, California
The Carneros Ranch wines, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, are sourced from some very notable Carneros Appellation vineyards including the: Haire, Sangiacomo, and Mahoney Vineyards. These vineyards, and the families who own them, are true pioneers in the wine industry. Their decades of dedication to the Carneros Appellation shows in the quality of their fruit and we do our best to bring that wonderful fruit character into the wines we produce.

Few winemakers have worked with cool climate California Pinot Noir and Chardonnay longer than Ken Foster. From David Bruce Winery in the ocean cooled Santa Cruz Mountains to Carneros Wine Company in the wind-swept Carneros appellation, Ken has studied a vast array of Pinot clones. the terroir they are grown in, and how the two will combine to express themselves in the wines he produces.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

Known for elegant wines that combine power and finesse, Carneros is set in the rolling hills that straddle the southernmost parts of both Sonoma and Napa counties. The cooling winds from the abutting San Pablo Bay, combined with lots of midday California sunshine, create an ideal environment for producing wines with a perfect balance of crisp acidity and well-ripened fruit.

This cooler pocket of California lends itself to growing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah. Carneros is an important source of sparkling wines made in the style of Champagne as well.
