Winemaker Notes

If you want a wine with intense flavors yet wonderful elegance, this is it! Our favorite new Shiraz this beauty sports juicy plummy fruit with some spice in the mix as well. Pleasant concentration of fruit with some oak complexity on the medium weighted palate, finishing with a grip from tannin. Surprisingly for this price category the wine has firmness at the finish and will age well for several years.

"This wine parallels Tahbilk's old-vine shiraz by offering flavor intensity without a lot of weight. The fruit is bright and structured on rails, opening from the tarry black herb scent to a lovely freshness, the red fruit implying tart cherry and raspberry. Long and spicy, this should age with grace."

Carlei - Green Vineyards, Australia
Sergio Carlei is one of those amazingly engaging people. His passion for his craft, his love of great wine, and his determination to achieve something magical is contagious!! A disciple of Rick Kinzbrunner of Giaconda, Sergio has shot onto to the scene in just a short few years. Shiraz is his signature variety. Currently 2 single vineyard wines produced with another bio dynamic source soon to come on line. Sergio’s wines have got extraordinary definition, wonderful mouth feel, freakish length, and are destined to age a very long time. This is an exciting discovery.

Though Syrah originated in the Rhône Valley of France, Australia is home to the oldest Syrah (called Shiraz here) vines on the planet. Found in Australia’s Barossa Valley, where phylloxera has never threated viticulture, these ancient vines are between 140 to 175 years old!

Having brought fame and merit to the country’s wine scene since the early 1950s, namely via the debut of Penfolds Grange, today Syrah (Shiraz) claims rank as the most widely planted grape in Australia. In fact, the amount of land dedicated to Shiraz in Australia is now almost equivalent to what it is in France. Australian Shiraz has its own personality with flavors and aromas of intense blackberry, fruitcake, menthol, tobacco leaf and umami. Conveniently one can find great Australian Shiraz at a variety of price points but the very best will be dense, gloriously complex and capable of long aging.
