Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Aromas of sweet black cherry, raspberry, rose petal and violet carry over onto a fresh palate of raspberry and strawberry flavors. Round, silky tannins support the bright fruit, and a touch of minerality complements the delicious red fruit expression over a smooth finish.

Two Creeks Vineyards includes grapes from two estate sites in the Anderson Valley, where the cooling influence of the Pacific allows for slow, even ripening. Each block is fermented separately and aged three months before blending; the wine then sees ten months in (35% new) French oak barrels. Scents of dried leaves after a rainfall, crayon wax, and red plum are outstanding. The plush, pillowy mouthfeel is awash with wild strawberry and tilled soil. Dried rose petals and balsamic have an effect on the minerality that, along with bright acidity, keeps the wine fresh on the palate.

Cakebread Cellars, California
Cakebread Cellars Winery Video

Over 30 years ago, Jack Cakebread came to photograph the Napa Valley for a book and while there, he casually mentioned his interest in one day owning a vineyard to some family friends who had a ranch in Rutherford. When he returned home that afternoon, the phone rang and it was the family friends offering to sell their property. He headed back up to the valley that same afternoon to make his best offer, and Cakebread Cellars was born.

As the Cakebread family reflects upon the many profound changes in the wine industry over the last 33 years, such as innovative farming techniques and new methods of reaching out to consumers, they note that their key values have remained the same. Dedication to making the highest quality wines and a commitment to family has followed a continuum as their first small vineyard has grown into a thriving internationally distributed wine company.

Anderson Valley, located in Mendocino County just above Sonoma County, is one of California’s coolest AVAs, allowing it a long growing season. Only 15 miles long, the region makes a slice eastward through the mountains, from the frigid Pacific Ocean. Dramatic diurnal temperature variations here preserve grape acidity and thus freshness in the finished wines. These are prime conditions for growing Pinot Noir, and the valley produces many fine versions. Characteristics of Anderson Valley Pinot Noir typically include crisp acidity, cranberry and strawberry notes as well as earthy notes of forest floor and mushroom.

Still Pinot Noir, however, is only part of the story. Pinot Noir, along with Chardonnay, are also grown for Anderson Valley’s exceptional sparkling wines. Produced via the traditional method, these offer a classic toasty note from lees aging, bright, complex fruit notes and a clean, refreshing character.
