    Winemaker Notes

Several small plots given up after the phylloxerna crisis, belonging either to the commune of Chambolle-Musigny or to individuals, were rented in order to form two larger and usable plots.

Planted in 1989, in soil favorable to the vine (planted in the 18th and 19th century), but uncultivated since, to produce a wine resulting from a commune which is dear to Bruno Clair for the finesse and the elegance of its wines. The venture appeared very positive because since 1992, first harvest of this vineyard, the wines have been fine and silky. With the years passing and the increasingly deeper rooting of the vines, the wines become more extensive and deep. The wines are well scented, silky and gain in texture and length. Thanks to their natural finesse, they can be drunk young or kept in storage for years.

Domaine Bruno Clair’s origins are Domaine Clair-Daü, one of the most celebrated domaines in Burgundy from the 1950s to the early 1970s.The domaine is 23 hectares of, well, everything: grand crus, values, rosé, geeky village level, geeky premier crus, and for a predominantly red wine estate, even some Corton-Charlemagne. There is some brilliant genetic material here too as it was from Bruno’s father (as well as from Ponsot) that the Dijon University got many of the cutting that are at the origin of today’s clones. The wines are about delicately extracted fruit on the front palate, backed by serious structure on the mid-palate. If there is one domaine in the Côte de Nuits poised to become (or re-become) a planetary rock star, given the holdings and the talent here, it is this one.

Celebrated as some of the best wine in the universe, red wine from Burgundy, otherwise known as red Burgundy, is Pinot noir. In fact Burgundy is the birthplace of Pinot noir and the source of the planet’s most sensual, delicate, valuable and sought-after Pinot noir wines.

Understanding and enjoying red Burgundy can stay simple, with a basic knowledge of its subregions, become more intricate by dialing down to the villages and vineyards or become a life-long passion, exploring climats (plots of vines), vintages and the post French Revolution land ownership laws. In any case, a fine red Burgundy will display refined nuances of black currant, red fruit, earth, spice, alluring floral aromatics and have great elegance, complexity and longevity.

Most famous, praised and collected of Burgunday are those from the Côte d'Or. Hundreds of millions of years ago, the area now called Côte d'Or was under a warm ocean whose sea floor has, over time, shifted and decomposed into various layers of limestone, sandstone and clay interspersed with ancient fossilized sea creatures. This is what is referred to as the famous escarpment upon which all of the highly sought-after Grands Crus and Premiers Crus vineyards can be found. In other words, from north to south, the best vineyards of Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-St-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot, Vosne-Romanée, Flagey-Echezeaux, Nuits-St-Georges, Aloxe-Corton, Pommard and Volnay follow the path of this ancient sea bed.
