Winemaker Notes

The 2012 Eruption is rich and intense. The wine has aromas of fresh blueberries, toasted brioche, black cherries, and mocha, giving way to flavors that are jammy, ripe and unctuous. The palate explodes with blackberries, dark currants, and clove while it layers supple and round coating tannins, making the wine both hedonistic while simultaneously elegant. The texture of this wine is perhaps its most distinguishing trait – mouth-coating with an endless finish. Be certain to have a second bottle on hand, the first won't last very long. The 2012 Eruption is a blend of Syrah, Malbec, Mourvedre, and Petite Sirah from the Volcano Ridge Vineyard located in the High Valley Appellation.

This wine pairs great with bbq pork spareribs, filet mignon or Penne alla'Amatriciana with fresh tomatoes, capers, onions, pancetta and pecorino cheese.

The chalk-like tannins and lean lines of stoniness are evident from Volcano Ridge Vineyard at 2,200 feet above sea level on the eastern end of High Valley. The wine was blended early from Syrah, Malbec, Mourvedre and Petite Sirah, and bottled without filtration. The eruption does indeed commence with the first sip: a flow of black fruit, coffee beans, currants, red berries and a nice touch of cherries dipped in cocoa powder. A definitive black pepper thread runs throughout the juicy, texturally satin, concentrated mouthfeel.

Hailing from a vineyard planted at 2,200 feet on the slope of an extinct volcano, this unconventional blend of syrah, malbec, mourvedre and petite sirah—fermented without inoculation—carries a plump and floral ripeness that’s satisfying. It’s girded by firm, glinting black tannins that seem to speak directly to Lake County's volcanic terroir. It’s a great buy, and would sing with juicy lamb shoulder.

The western section of High Valley Appellation holds the magical lands know as High Serenity Ranch. The 2,500 acre former cattle ranch is now home to Brassfield Estate Winery & Vineyard. In 1973, Jerry Brassfield purchased the original 1,600 acres as a cattle ranch and wildlife reserve. While the cattle have gone, the wildlife still remains. Over the next three decades Mr. Brassfield continued acquiring lands. Today, the estate includes both the eastern and the western sections of High Valley as well as ownership of Round Mountain Volcano.

In 1998, the Brassfield family realized the land’s true destiny was as a world-class wine property. As a result, Brassfield Estate Winery & Vineyard was established. With the new estate vineyards increased production, the winery has grown with additional tank & barrel storage capacity and a state-of-the-art crushing facility.

With hundreds of red grape varieties to choose from, winemakers have the freedom to create a virtually endless assortment of blended red wines. In many European regions, strict laws are in place determining the set of varieties that may be used, but in the New World, experimentation is permitted and encouraged resulting in a wide variety of red wine styles. Blending can be utilized to enhance balance or create complexity, lending different layers of flavors and aromas. For example, a red wine blend variety that creates a fruity and full-bodied wine would do well combined with one that is naturally high in acidity and tannins. Sometimes small amounts of a particular variety are added to boost color or aromatics. Blending can take place before or after fermentation, with the latter, more popular option giving more control to the winemaker over the final qualities of the wine.

How to Serve Red Wine

A common piece of advice is to serve red wine at “room temperature,” but this suggestion is imprecise. After all, room temperature in January is likely to be quite different than in August, even considering the possible effect of central heating and air conditioning systems. The proper temperature to aim for is 55° F to 60° F for lighter-bodied reds and 60° F to 65° F for fuller-bodied wines.

How Long Does Red Wine Last?

Once opened and re-corked, a bottle stored in a cool, dark environment (like your fridge) will stay fresh and nicely drinkable for a day or two. There are products available that can extend that period by a couple of days. As for unopened bottles, optimal storage means keeping them on their sides in a moderately humid environment at about 57° F. Red wines stored in this manner will stay good – and possibly improve – for anywhere from one year to multiple decades. Assessing how long to hold on to a bottle is a complicated science. If you are planning long-term storage of your reds, seek the advice of a wine professional.

Sitting on the northeast side of the Clear Lake appellation, this warm area boasts multiple soil types that allow growers a lot of flexibility and experimentation with grape varieties. While Sauvignon blanc is a mainstay, this zone excels with Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, as well as other less common varieties like Barbera and Tempranillo.
