Bright straw-gold. An expansive, complex bouquet evokes ripe orchard and pit fruit nectar, honey, floral and pungent herb qualities and a hint of smokiness. Plush, seamless and concentrated in style, offering sappy, gently sweet pear, nectarine, orange, mace and marzipan flavors braced by a core of juicy acidity. Shows superb definition and tenacity on the finish, which displays an intriguing push/pull of depth and vivacity.
Riesling possesses a remarkable ability to reflect the character of wherever it is grown while still maintaining its identity. A regal variety of incredible purity and precision, this versatile grape can be just as enjoyable dry or sweet, young or old, still or sparkling and can age longer than nearly any other white variety. Somm Secret—Given how difficult it is to discern the level of sweetness in a Riesling from the label, here are some clues to find the dry ones. First, look for the world “trocken.” (“Halbtrocken” or “feinherb” mean off-dry.) Also a higher abv usually indicates a drier Riesling.
One of the few northwestern Spanish regions with a focus on a red variety, Bierzo, part of Castilla y León, is home to the flowery and fruity Mencia grape. Mencia produces balanced and bright red wines full of strawberry, raspberry, pomegranate, baking spice, pepper and black licorice. The well-drained soils of Bierzo are slate and granite.
