Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The 2017 Sugar Shack Estate Chardonnay is a compelling wine. Aromatics of green apple, salted caramel, pecan pie, and honeysuckle intertwine with wafts of exotic citrus oils. Rich and forward on the mouth, the layers of lush orchard fruits are integrated with refined hints of savory spices that saturate the palate a leave a lasting impression. This is a stunning Chardonnay to drink now or hold for 10 years. The wine is slightly hazy showing our commitment to minimal intervention winemaking.

Professional Ratings

This is very structured and powerful with Montrachet sensibility. Apple and dried pineapple character. Full body. Dense and layered. Almost chewy. Superb structure. Tight and real. Textural. Drink or hold.

  • 98

The 2017 Chardonnay Sugar Shack is produced from Montrachet clone vines grown in Rutherford (Napa Valley). POW! It comes charging out of the glass, all guns blazing! Notes of lemon tart, lime cordial and preserved pineapples leap from the glass, followed by suggestions of chopped cashews, coriander seed, juniper and aniseed. Full-bodied, the palate has a seductively satiny texture and soft acidity, leading with bold, expressive stone fruit preserves and spicy layers, finishing very long and very decadent.

Aubert The Passion of Elegant Farming Winery Image

Mark Aubert’s Sonoma Coast vineyard-designate Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs have risen in popularity at a dizzying speed. Aubert’s career in winemaking began in 1989 at Peter Michael under the tutelage of Helen Turley, which led to his time at Colgin, Sloan, Futo and then Bryant Family, before founding Aubert Wines with his wife Teresa in 1999. His wines express the essence of singular terroirs with an effortless grace. Mark crafts the wines of Aubert to speak to a variety of wine lovers with one thing in common – selective palates that expect nothing but the best.
