    Amador Foothilll Winery, California
Located in the picturesque foothills east of Sacramento with a spectacular view of the Sierras, Amador Foothill Winery produces classic vineyard-designated Zinfandel and is among the pioneers making Sangiovese in California. Owner-winemakers Katie Quinn and Ben Zeitman also produce barrel-fermented Fume Blanc and Semillon at this 8,000 case facility.

Capable of a vast array of styles, Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp, refreshing variety that equally reflects both terroir and varietal character. Though it can vary depending on where it is grown, a couple of commonalities always exist—namely, zesty acidity and intense aromatics. This variety is of French provenance. Somm Secret—Along with Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc is a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon. That green bell pepper aroma that all three varieties share is no coincidence—it comes from a high concentration of pyrazines (herbaceous aromatic compounds) inherent to each member of the family.

Famous even as early as the 1800s for its hefty Zinfandels, the California Shenandoah Valley wine industry naturally halted with Prohibition. But the region gained momentum again in the 1970s with renewed enthusiasm for the potential of its old vines.
