Winemaker Notes

The vineyards for Palacio Quemado extend over 100Ha. surrounding the bodega. La Raya is sourced from a single parcel within the estate selected for its advanced age, orientation, and unique soils.

Once the wine is blended, ageing lasts 18 months in the fermentation vessel (50% concrete vat, 50% neutral foudre). The wine is bottled without fining or filtration, and is aged for 12 months in the bottle before release. La Raya is the Alvear family's Grand Cru expression of Extremadura Alentejana, where their work has been critical in resuscitating the cultivation and vinification of traditional Portuguese varieties in the southwest of the Iberian peninsula.

Blend: 90% Trincadeira, 10% Garnacha

Dark garnet. Intensely perfumed, mineral-driven red and blue fruit, potpourri and incense scents show excellent clarity and spicy lift. Palate-staining raspberry, boysenberry, spicecake and floral pastille flavors deepen steadily through the back half. Manages to come off powerful as well as lithe and shows no rough edges. Finishes smooth and extremely long, featuring sneaky tannins and lingering red fruit, mineral and floral notes.

Alvear Bodega Palacio Quemado Winery Image
Bodega Palacio Quemado is owned by he Alvear family of Bodegas Alvear in D.O. Montilla-Moriles. The Alvear family founded Palacio Quemado in 1999, with the intention of exploring and championing the unique terroir and indigenous varieties of the land of Extremadura, located in the Spanish south-west. Their relationship with Envinate, a young and dynamic winemaking team that works all over Spain, has grown for many years. La Zarcita is one of two wines that Alvear produces in conjunction with Envinate at the Palacio Quemado estate, where the team of Envinate has produced their own label for quite some time. The philosophy of the wine - La Zarcita is to blend different indigenous varieties from the single Palacio Quemado estate to produce a young and fresh expression of the terroir of Extremadura. While the philosophy of the second wine - Los Acilates is to produce an honest and fresh expression of a single plot within the estate, planted with heritage indigenous varieties. The Vineyards are located near Alange, within the region of Extremadura. Several varietals including Trincadeira Prieta, Touriga Nacional, Garnacha Tintorera and Syrah are all grown on the estate, which was first planted in 1999. The vines are situated on rolling hillsides at elevations of 1105 ft. above sea level and enjoy a continental climate that is influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. Guyot training is applied. Exhaustive manual field work, dividing the vineyard into small sub-plots, which are managed in an individualized manner. Sustainable viticulture without the use of harmful fungicides, pesticides, herbicides, irrigation, or fertilizers.

Spanish red wine is known for being bold, heady, rustic and age-worthy, Spain is truly a one-of-a-kind wine-producing nation. A great majority of the country is hot, arid and drought-ridden, and since irrigation has only been recently introduced and (controversially) accepted, viticulture has sustained—and flourished—only through a great understanding of Spain’s particular conditions. Large spacing between vines allows each enough resources to survive and as a result, the country has the most acreage under vine compared to any other country, but is usually third in production.

Of the Spanish red wines, the most planted and respected grape variety is Tempranillo, the star of Spain’s Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions. Priorat specializes in bold red blends, Jumilla has gained global recognition for its single varietal Monastrell and Utiel-Requena has garnered recent attention for its reds made of Bobal.
