Winemaker Notes

This deep red-purple colored wine has a rich nose with aromas of black fruits such as blackberries. Additional notes of cloves, dried plums, almonds, tobacco leaves, a touch of vanilla and liquorice, traditional to Odfjell's terroir, add complexity. Full bodied, juicy, with firm, ripe, velvety tannins and a long finish.

A top-notch value Cabernet with no flaws. The fruit on the nose is pretty and stylish but doesn't force the issue, while the palate is juicy and fresh with flavors of cola, cassis and wild berry. Not a complicated wine, but one that pushes all the right buttons. Ripe and friendly to the last drop. A lot of wine for the money. Best Buy.

Odfjell
Founded on the Odfjell family’s international exploration as Norwegian Armadors (ship owners) and their passion for wine, Odfjell Vineyards strives to produce unique quality wines in a sustainable way.

Odfjell’s quest is to make wines that are a true expression of the terroir. Their low-yield vineyards are handled with individual care. The grapes are hand-picked in order to ensure the fruit arrives at the winery as intact as possible.

Vineyards were first planted in the Maipo Estate in 1994. Today, after 20 years, 85 hectares are planted in Maipo. Including the vineyards in Cauquenes, Lontue, and Colchagua, Odfjell have a total surface area of 115 hectares being cultivated, planted with a wide array of grape varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carmenere, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and old Carignan vines from Cauquenes.

Odfjell is committed to being a leader in progressive vineyard management, and they are dedicated to elevating the image and practice of viticulture in Chile. The goal of this work is to produce the best possible wines in the vineyards, while maintaining the long-term commitment to sustainable agriculture and environmental winemaking practices. For this reason, their vineyards are 100% organic and we they also recently begun biodynamic farming.

Carmenere

View all wine

Dark, full-bodied, and herbaceous with a spicy kick, Carménère has found great success in Chile, far from its birthplace of Bordeaux. Although Carménère once accompanied Malbec and Petit Verdot as a minor blending grape in Bordeaux, it is now virtually extinct there, though it has been thriving since the mid-nineteenth century in Chile. Originally mistaken for Merlot, it is now successful of its own accord and plantings continue to increase. It is bottled both on its own and as part of Bordeaux-inspired blends.

In the Glass

If not fully ripe, Carménère is often marked by a green, herbaceous character (think green bell pepper and green peppercorn), and expresses flavors of red berry and black pepper when just ripe. With additional hangtime at the end of harvest, it is reminiscent more of blackberry, blueberry, and dark plum, with rich and savory notes of chocolate, coffee, smoke, and soy sauce.

Perfect Pairings

Carménère can easily overpower lighter fare, but makes a great match for a hearty steak or barbecued red meat. It can also work well with white meat when prepared with a richer sauce such as mole.

Sommelier Secret

Perhaps Carménère’s herbal character can be explained in part by familial relations—due to the strange nature of grapevine breeding, Carménère is both a progeny and a great-grandchild of the similarly flavored Cabernet Franc.
