Winemaker Notes

Ruby red in color. Concentrated aromas of dark fruit (blackcurrant, blackberries) and a hint of bakers chocolate. Intricate flavor intensity, with full body. Bright flavors of dark cherry, plum and cassis, with a pleasant, persistent finish. Lush texture, with velvety tannins.

Wine Enthusiast
Smooth and polished, this shows real Napa character, with dry tannins framing blackberry, black currant and herb flavors. It doesn't seem to be built for aging, so open it over the next year or two.

Rutherford Hill Winery, Napa Valley, California
2009 Cabernet Sauvignon
Nestled high in the Eastern Hills, Rutherford Hill Winery commands a spectacular view overlooking the Rutherford bench of Napa Valley. It is from a handful of the most select Napa vineyards that Rutherford Hill continues its tradition of crafting legendary wines. In 1976, while the rest of the world was just beginning to take notice of Napa Valley, the founders of Rutherford Hill recognized a unique opportunity. They believed that the climate and soil of the valley, similar to Pomerol, were well suited to Merlot and were among the first to pioneer what has become Napa's premier varietal. Today, this tradition of quality continues, expressed by wines of great complexity and character.

The Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without thinking of the other. Although Cabernet has many important outposts throughout the wine world, nowhere else has it achieved such success (and, at the highest end, commanded such lofty prices) than in Napa. Here, it is responsible for bold, opulent, and dark-fruited wines with grippy tannins and a healthy dose of alcohol. The best examples can age for decades. Each of Napa’s smaller sub-AVAs imparts a different character to Cabernet, such as Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
