Winemaker Notes

The three varieties that make up this wine (40% Monastrell, 40% Syrah, and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon) come together to shape a well structured, concentrated, and intensely aromatic blend. Good structure, mouth filling, powerful, black fruit and spiciness from Syrah, juicy and fresh.

Wine Enthusiast
Focused and fresh, this has aromas of berry and integrated citrus. It feels rubbery and lush, with acidic cut and roasted flavors of plum, blackberry and leather. It finishes mildly roasted and earthy, with a leathery lasting impression.

Bodegas Carchelo, Jumilla, Spain
2010 C
Bodegas Carchelo dates from the early 1980s and pioneering efforts to modernize viticulture in what had been a backwater viticultural region. Founding partner Juan Sierva's nearly 700 acres of prime vineyards are widely distributed in the region, at widely varying altitudes and exposures. Varieties grown feature Monastrell (in France Mourvèdre, both ungrafted head-pruned and wire-trained vineyards) plus Syrah, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Famous for the robust and earthy, black-fruit dominated, Monastrell (known as Mourvedre in France), Jumilla is an arid and hot region in southeast Spain. Its vine yields tend to be torturously low but this can create wines of exceptional intensity and flavor. Quality combined with accessible price points give the region great recognition on international markets far and wide.

The reds from Jumilla are heady and spicy, packed with fruit and show aromas of dried licorice and herbs. If you like Syrah, Grenache or Pinot noir, a red wine from Jumilla would be a perfect next choice!

Other Red Blends

With hundreds of red grape varieties to choose from, winemakers have the freedom to create a virtually endless assortment of blended wines. In many European regions, strict laws are in place determining the set of varieties that may be used, but in the New World experimentation is permitted and encouraged. Blending can be utilized to create complex wines with many different layers of flavors and aromas, or to create more balanced wines. For example, a variety that is soft and full-bodied may be combined with one that is lighter with naturally high acidity. Sometimes small amounts of a particular variety are added to boost color or aromatics. Blending can take place before or after fermentation, with the latter, more popular option giving more control to the winemaker over the final qualities of the wine.
