Winemaker Notes

"The 2007 vintage gave our Hewitt Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon an explosive fruit expression of ripe berry, black cherry and juicy plum character that is awesome," says Winemaker Tom Rinaldi. Dark fruit, mineral and floral notes meld with bittersweet chocolate and toffee from oak aging. The enticing violet note, which we don't see in other Rutherford vineyards, is part of Hewitt Vineyard's unique personality. The muscular tannins carry the flavors through a long finish, while balanced acidity gives a vibrancy that is sometimes lacking in powerful Cabs.

Critical Acclaim

RP 93
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon is a slightly softer, more forward wine, but it should last just as long. It is more typically Californian in its opulent black currant fruit intermixed with notes of chocolate, crushed rocks, vanilla, and black fruits. The tannins are sweeter than in the 2006, and the wine is full-bodied with a layered texture, admirable purity and depth, and a blockbuster finish with no shortage of tannin. Approachable now, it will be better in 2-3 years, and should last for 20-25 years.
WS 92
Wine Spectator
Offers ripe, supple plum and currant flavors, with notes of smoky oak, crushed rock, graphite and loamy earth and touches of tobacco and cedar. Full-bodied, with a layered finish. Drink now through 2020.
CG 90
Connoisseurs' Guide
Hewitt's penchant for big, maximally ripened, highly extracted Cabernets has been toned down just a bit here, for while this wine wants for nothing in the way of stuffing, ripeness and very sweet oak, it steers away from the brink of excess and tempers its richness with a real sense of refinement. It already shows a bit of layered complexity that augers well for the future, and its balance of tannin, acid and keen Cabernet fruit guarantees a good many years of improvement.
WE 90
Wine Enthusiast
Made from 100% Cabernet, this wine is very extracted and jammy, in the modern style of extreme ripeness and fruit-forwardness. Sweet oak, 70% of it new, adds layers of cream, vanilla and buttered toast. Appeals now for its juicy, New World style.

Hewitt Vineyard, , California
Hewitt Vineyard
The historic Hewitt Vineyard resides on the famed Rutherford Bench, a narrow ribbon of gravel-rich alluvial soils on the western side of the Napa Valley that has - since the late 1800s - produced California's best Cabernet Sauvignon.

William Hewitt purchased this property in 1962 and received guidance in planting the vineyard from legendary Beaulieu Vineyard (BV) winemaker André Tchelistcheff. BV purchased Cabernet Sauvignon from Hewitt Vineyard and included it in its top wines for many years. When Hewitt Vineyard was offered for sale in 2000, Chalone Wine Group President Tom Selfridge, who began his career at Beaulieu and knew first-hand the vineyard's extraordinary quality, jumped at the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to add this treasure to the company's portfolio.

Today, Hewitt Vineyard produces only estate Cabernet Sauvignon from its extraordinary property. Through this exclusive focus, Hewitt is a leader in Rutherford's winemaking renaissance.

The Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without thinking of the other. Although Cabernet has many important outposts throughout the wine world, nowhere else has it achieved such success (and, at the highest end, commanded such lofty prices) than in Napa. Here, it is responsible for bold, opulent, and dark-fruited wines with grippy tannins and a healthy dose of alcohol. The best examples can age for decades. Each of Napa’s smaller sub-AVAs imparts a different character to Cabernet, such as Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
