    Winemaker Notes

The grapes for Two Angels come from the renowned Shannon Ridge Vineyards, extremely volcanic, red pumice stone terroir. Hugging the mountain rims along the east edge of the High Valley AVA at close to 2,200 feet (the highest vineyards in California), the area is reminiscent of the Rhone Valley's Crozes-Hermitage vineyards. All the grapes for this wine came from a vineyard with a slope of 40 degrees. The fruit was all hand-picked and hand-sorted before cold soaking and a long, cool fermentation. The wine ages for ten months using 25-percent new French oak.

The 2007 Two Angels Petite Sirah is "dark as the night" and boasts savory aromas of ripe, dark berries (blackberry, boysenberry and raspberry), violets, and ripe plum, with a hint of roast game. Abundant fruit flavors in this well-structured wine are nicely integrated with toasted oak and a touch of black licorice.

Two Angels, a line of Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and Petite Sirah owned by the Kreps family, with grapes coming from the renowned Shannon Ridge vineyards in the High Valley AVA, Lake County, California.

The label art for Two Angels was created by Jacob de Backer in 1591 and the theme is the hilarity of inebreation and the trauma of the morning after. Excessive joy must be countered by equally excessive sorrow, with penitential atonement for pleasure.

With its deep color, firm tannins and bold flavors, there is nothing petite about Petite Sirah. The variety, originally known as Durif in the Rhône, took on its more popular moniker after being imported to California in the early 1880s. Quintessentially recognized today as a grape of the Golden State, Petite Sirah works well blended with Zinfandel and finds success as a single varietal wine in the state’s warmer districts. Somm Secret—Petite Sirah is not a smaller version of Syrah but it is an offspring of Syrah and the now nearly extinct French Alpine variety called Peloursin.

Reaching up California's coastline and into its valleys north of San Francisco, the North Coast AVA includes six counties: Marin, Solano, Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake. While Napa and Sonoma enjoy most of the glory, the rest produce no shortage of quality wines in an intriguing and diverse range of styles.

Climbing up the state's rugged coastline, the chilly Marin County, just above the City and most of Sonoma County, as well as Mendocino County on the far north end of the North Coast successfully grow cool-climate varieties like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and in some spots, Riesling. Inland Lake County, on the other hand, is considerably warmer, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc produce some impressive wines with affordable price tags.
