About Gia Coppola
A third generation filmmaker, photographer, artist, impromptu (and impressive) mixologist--Gia Coppola is all of these things and much more. Shy is a word she uses to describe herself, but her accomplishments are far from shy. In 2012, after sitting on the board of directors for the family's Francis Ford Coppola Presents wine, food and resort business for more than a decade it seems fitting that Gia was inspired to create her own line of wines. Gia worked alongside Francis and the winemaking and design teams to create a wine brand that reflects her personality. The collaboration garnered three distinct wines for Gia by Gia Coppola--Frizzante Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Pinot Noir--crafted to be light, unpretentious and inspiring.
Francis Ford Coppola Winery, re-opened in July 2010, is the latest venture from Francis Ford Coppola, whose passion for wine, food and adventure is nowhere more evident than in this new production – a winery resort located in the heart of Alexander Valley, California. Among the many attractions at the property, Francis Ford Coppola Winery features a wine tasting bar, two restaurants, swimming pools, a movie gallery, a performing arts pavilion and a park area with game tables and bocce courts.
Francis puts it best, saying the winery is meant to be "a wine wonderland, a park of pleasure where people of all ages can enjoy all the best things in life – food, wine, music, dancing, games, swimming and performances of all types. A place to celebrate the love of life."
California’s most praised white wine, Chardonnay is also the state’s most planted white grape variety. Diverse terrain and microclimates allow for an incredible range of wine styles.
Chardonnay planted in the cooler, coastal zones takes on bright characteristics like lemon zest, key lime, green apple and wet flint. For this style, look to the chilly Sonoma Coast, Carneros, Santa Cruz Mountains, Santa Lucia Highlands and Edna Valley.
The inland zones of California’s coast, such as the Russian River, Sonoma, Napa and Livermore Valleys maintain a more Goldilocks-esque climate where both styles go. Early picking retains acidity and creates a leaner style but leaving the grapes to hang creates an approachable Chardonnay, balancing richness and finesse.
Chardonnay also plays a major part in the sparkling wine production of the Anderson Valley and Carneros.
