Winemaker Notes

The 2012 Entity Shiraz displays deep ruby purple color with attractive blackberry and blueberry aromatics, intermingled with hints of savory spice. A full bodied and generous palate, with layers of dark berry fruit and youthful balanced tannins. Very pure and mouth filling, with ample structure to reward cellaring for 12 years plus.

This is, I think, the best edition of this carefully assembled shiraz composed of parcels selected from Krondorf, Ebenezer, Greenock and the Eden Valley. The nose is ripe and mellow, giving up layers of rich blackberry and Angelina-plum fruit. There's a wealth of spices and a soulful, earthy depth, as well as an ever-so-slightly-smoky, tarry edge. The palate is smoothly honed and focuses on a dense mid-palate presence that holds plenty of bright blackberry and plum flavors. Deceptively sturdy tannins carry hauntingly throughout – shadowy and in the background; they will underpin some considerable cellaring given the chance. But drinking very well already. Full credit to the masterful Duval. Drink in 2018

This is another top-flight example of how good the 2012 vintage was for South Australian Shiraz. The oak here is so subtle as to not factor into the wine’s scents of raspberry and cracked pepper. Hints of spice and vanilla mark the palate, gently accenting red berry fruit before ending in a flood of silky tannins. Drink now–2030. Editors' Choice

Fresh and vital, with expressive flavors of dark plum and spice on an open texture, coming together with intensity and grace on the finish against a light blanket of tannins. Drink now through 2022.

John Duval, Australia
John Duval John Duval at Eden Valley Vineyard Winery Image

John Duval is one of Australia's most highly regarded winemakers. Raised on a South Australian farm with three generations of grape growers before him, his vinous path was fated. However, it was during his 28-year tenure with Penfolds that his passion for the famed Barossa Valley flourished. As Chief Winemaker and custodian of Australia's most famous wine, Grange, he was instrumental in establishing Penfolds as one of the world's great wineries. His accolades include being named UK Wine and Spirit Competition's International Winemaker of the Year, Red Winemaker of the Year (twice) and receiving Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year award. In 2003, John embarked on his own label, John Duval Wines, inspired by the best of the Barossa Valley's low-yielding, old vine vineyards. With a deft touch he crafts intense wines that are as complex and distinctive as the diverse terroir of his treasured Barossa Valley.
