Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Dense red and dark red berry aromas mix with mint and sweet ground spice and red floral aroma to create a heady and seductive nose. Crisp and precise berry flavors flood your palate and them merge with the spice notes and expand across your tongue and palate along with the wine's juicy acidity and broad texture. The finish begins with a bit of grip from the ripe tannins and dense fruit components, then expands slowly upwards into your cheeks. The finish of Justice is unique: the lingering flavors seem to amplify and expand throughout your mouth and nose. It is this texture that defines the terroir of this wonderful site.

Professional Ratings

The 2012 Pinot Noir Justice Vineyard comes from 777 clone in a wind-exposed elevation. Cropped at 2.4 tons per acre, it was picked October 9 and sees 16 months in French oak (one-third new). It has a very floral bouquet with well-defined Morello cherry, crushed strawberry and cassis-scented bouquet that overall is very feminine. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple texture and well-judged acidity. Quite harmonious in the mouth and exerting a gentle grip, the persistence is quite impressive, although it will need a year in bottle to fully express itself.

St. Innocent Winery, Oregon
St. Innocent Winery Winery Image
St. Innocent Winery was founded in May 1988 by Mark Vlossak, the current winemaker and president, and eight investors. Ten tons of grapes were crushed the first fall, producing 396 cases of still and 176 cases of sparkling wine. Production increased to our full capacity of 6800 cases in 2004. The winery is located in Salem, Oregon, at the southeast corner of the Eola Hills, in the mid-Willamette valley.

St. Innocent produces small lot, handmade wines: seven single vineyard Pinot noirs and a blended Pinot noir called the Villages Cuvée, two Chardonnay from Dijon clone plantings, two Pinot gris, and a Pinot blanc.

The philosophy behind the winemaking at St Innocent is that the function of wine is to complement and extend the pleasure of a meal. The characteristics of a wine should enhance different food and flavor combinations - this interaction amplifies the pleasure of a meal. To this end, St. Innocent wines tend toward higher acid levels, and more diverse and balanced flavors.

Home of some of the planet’s most amazingly elegant and expressive Pinot noir, the Willamette Valley is a pastoral, mixed landscape of green, bucolic rolling hills, dramatic forestlands and small, independent, friendly wine growers. As a leader in environmental stewardship, the valley has some of the nation’s most protective land use policies, with two-thirds of its vineyards farmed sustainably and over half, organically. While the valley claims a cool, continental climate, and is heavily influenced by the cold, moist winds of the Pacific Ocean, its warm and dry summers allow for the steady, even ripening of Pinot noir.

The potential of Willamette Valley Pinot noir continues to attract the investment of serious growers and winemakers both locally and from abroad, as naturally the finished wines bring accolades from professionals and enthusiasts. With a range of styles from delicate dried cherry, raspberry and hibiscus to stronger notes of truffle, mocha, plum and spice, a fine Willamette Valley Pinot noir is a perfect expression of both character and grace.
