Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The color is intense, deep red with hints of violet, with a nose that is powerful, complex, rich, extremely elegant, refined and very deep. Various notes of red fruit (blackcurrants, raspberries). Concentrated, pure nose, with a smokiness and a minerality that istypical of this wine. A smooth, rich, full-bodied attack. The palate is distinguished and elegant, with refined tannin structure. The samearomatic profile as the nose develops, with intense fruit, lovely minerality and pleasant smoky notes. The palate has superb length and supple tannins, making Château Malartic-Lagravière 2012 already very accessible, while developing a complexity that suggests it will improve further with age.

Blend: 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot

Big, ripe and juicy, this wears its rich black fruits right up front. A strong and firmly tannic structure serves as a background to the fruit. The wine is rich, complex and full of potential. Spice, ginger and nutmeg come through at the end along with the fruit. Drink from 2022.

This large estate of 131 acres has been run brilliantly by a Belgian family, the Bonnies since their acquisition a number of years ago. The quality of the white and red have soared to exceptional heights, and this is certainly still one of the more realistically priced wines of Pessac-Lèognan and classified crus. The 2012 is a beauty, with a dense ruby/purple color, a fabulously plush, opulent texture and medium to full-bodied flavors of cassis, spicy earth and blueberry. Quite rich, yet light on its feet, this is an absolutely textbook Pessac-Lèognan, with wonderfully velvety tannins. Drink it now, or drink it in 25 years. This is a brilliant wine.

Solid, with dense layers of fig sauce, plum cake and blackberry confiture, laced with graphite and warm tar details. The long finish ripples with spice hints and black fruit, leaving a mouthwatering feel despite the heft. Best from 2017 through 2022.

The 2012 Château Marlartic Lagravière shows the beautiful and distinctive personality of the Pessac-Léognan region of Bordeaux—earth, mineral, and chalk. The wine's beautiful black fruits do an excellent job of rounding the wine out. Drinks well now with savory lamb shanks. (Tasted: January 30, 2015, San Francisco, CA)

Since acquiring Château Malartic-Lagravière in 1997, the Bonnie family has continued to work tirelessly, with passion and commitment, to perfect the estate’s wines and carry them to the highest level.

The estate used to belong the family of Comte Hippolyte Maurès de Malartic, was known under the name of Domaine de la Gravière until 1850, when it changed name to take on its current name of Château Malartic-Lagravière. The Bonnies and their team are doing everything to enable this premium terroir to express itself in all its magnificence: intra-plot management of the vineyard, High Environmental Value certification and the whole winemaking process is gravity-fed. They develop complex, balanced, elegant wines, so tailored they can be considered ‘haute-couture’.

Château Malartic-Lagravière is one of the only six classified growths both for its red and white. Its wines are well known all over the world amongst the very best wines in the Pessac-Léognan appellation.
