Winemaker's Notes:

The 2011 Pinot Grigio is an attractive pale gold with a pleasing aroma of freshly cut pears. The palate is medium bodied with a soft, dry textural finish.

Serve lightly chilled. Try it with fritto misto, pan fried veal or simply as a refreshing aperitif.

Winemaker's Notes:

Burgans is made at the famous Bodega Martin Codax by Luciano Almoedo, perhaps the biggest advocate of the Albariño varietal in Spain. Luciano was extremely influential in obtaining worldwide recognition for not only the varietal, but also Rias-Baixas. Today, the Bodega has grown considerably and is known as one of the most progressive in the zone. The use of wood is definitively eschewed at the Bodega in order to preserve the natural lift and minerality of the grapes. As such, the wines are fermented and aged in stainless steel with light lees stirring. The wine is blended by Eric Solomon, working in concert with the property, and is bottled in the spring after harvest.

Additional wines from Burgans:

About Burgans:

The Burgans estate is located in the Rias-Baixas region in Spain’s northwest corner in the region of Galicia. The region of Rias-Baixas is heavily influenced by the Atlantic, with high levels of rainfall and relative humidity. Temperatures are quite moderate and the region is extremely fertile, with miles and miles of green rolling hills. The vineyards are planted on these gently rolling hills on dark, humid soil which sits over granitic, and in some places, schist soils. Martin Codax is located in the fertile Salnes Valley on the Mont Burgans, for which this wine is named.

Burgans is made at the famous Bodega Martin Codax by Luciano Almoedo, perhaps the biggest advocate of the Albarino varietal in Spain. Luciano was extremely influential in obtaining worldwide recognition for not only the varietal, but also Rias-Baixas, where he was the founder and first leader of the AOC. Today, the Bodega has grown considerably and is known as one of the most progressive in the zone.

Luciano Almoedo remains the winemaker at this prestigious estate, producing pure Albarino bottlings with lovely aromatics and precision. Wine Spectator rating: 89 points

Winemaker's Notes:

This wine starts with a sweet aroma followed by dill and cold ashes (a consistent aromatic in the blocks Torii Mor gets from Temperance Hill Vineyard), followed by dark cherry and oak spice notes. The flavors show rich earthiness with dark cherries, dark chocolate, and a long cigar box-oak spice finish. The mouth-feel is thick, rich and medium sweet with a spicy finish. The texture shows rich round tannins which show a little dryness in the long finish.
My Notes:

About Torii Mor Winery:

As a long-time connoisseur of French Burgundy, Dr. Donald Olson set out on a journey to create world-class wine in his beloved state of Oregon. In 1993, he founded Torii Mor as a tribute to his late son Leif. With its roots in the forefront of Oregon's wine industry, Olson Estate Vineyard, planted in 1972, is one of the oldest vineyards in Oregon. Sitting high in the Dundee Hills Appellation at 800 feet on just under fifteen acres of Pinot Noir, the fruit of Olson Estate was the main focus of Torii Mor's first vintage. From its modest beginnings in 1993 of no more than 1,000 cases, Torii Mor has matured into an ultra-premium producer of Pinot Noir with an annual production of 15,000 cases.

Since its beginnings in Burgundy, Pinot Noir has long been considered one of the most "terroir" expressive varieties of grape. This strong tie to the earth was something Dr. Olson wanted to convey when he decided on a name for his new venture. Borrowing from the Japanese, "Torii" refers to the ornate gates often seen at the entrances of gardens. "Mor," meaning earth, was then chosen as homage to Dr. Olson's Scandinavian heritage. By joining these two distinct languages, the name Torii Mor and a romantic image of a beautiful gate to the earth was created.

Late in 2004, Jacques Tardy joined Torii Mor as head winemaker. With his Burgundian heritage and five generations of winemakers in his family history, Jacques brought the experience and style for which Torii Mor is now recognized. With a keen focus on structure and balance, the elegance of Jacques' wines has branded Torii Mor as one of the top-ranked producers of Pinot Noir in the United States.

Brilliant ruby-red in color with loads of ripe blackberry, strawberry and currant on the nose. The plush fruit flavors are deliciously integrated with subtle hints of mocha, tobacco and oak spice. Full and rich with soft tannins, the lush layers of fruit and spice are backed by lively acidity. This everyday Sangiovese is the perfect choice for barbecues, pastas, pizza and sausages.

Winemaker's Notes:

This full-bodied and fruity wine comes from vines grown high on the slopes of Mont Ventoux, one of the best vineyards in the Rhone Valley.

This blend of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, and Cinsault grapes has produced a typical Rhone Valley style; full of fruit and spice aromas, it has soft tannins and good body.

Serve at 62F to accompany most foods or to be drunk on its own, this is a delicious wine for easy drinking.

My Notes:

Additional wines from La Vieille Ferme:

About La Vieille Ferme:

Jean Pierre Perrin established La Vieille Ferme over 35 years ago, when he chose to produce an inexpensive, straightforward Rhône wine to sell by direct mail to French wine lovers. He used the same grape varieties in similar proportions to those planted at the family's Château de Beaucastel, in a similar vinification process. The result was an immediate success in France, a wine of character and style in keeping with its Beaucastel heritage.

Initially, Jean Pierre made only Côtes du Rhône, but steeply rising grape prices in 1976 caused him to switch to Côtes du Ventoux and eventually to produce a white wine from the mountainous Côtes du Luberon. La Vieille Ferme was introduced to the United States in 1970. The response was an immediate, overwhelming acceptance and an outpouring of critical acclaim from eminently knowledgeable critics who recognized La Vieille Ferme for its consistently fine quality and value.

Winemaker's Notes:

This Eroica shows the crisp acidity of the cooler 2008 vintage. The wine exudes mandarin orange and sweet lime aromas and flavors with subtle mineral notes. The mouth-watering acidity is beautifully balanced by flavorful Washington Riesling fruit. After a decade we have truly found our 'Eroica style,' striving for beautiful bright fruit with crisp acidity and enhanced minerarilty.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Eroica:

About Eroica:

Launched in 1999, Eroica is a labor of love for two of the world's great Riesling producers. One from the Old World, Dr. Loosen estate of Germany, and the other from the New World, Chateau Ste. Michelle of Washington state. An intermingling of Old and New World philosophies and technique enables the crafting of an extraordinary Riesling from Washington state grapes. Named for Beethoven's Third Symphony, Eroica reflects not only its variety and site, but also its heritage: bold and forward from its Washington roots, elegant and refined from German inspiration.

The first five vintages of Eroica Riesling (1999-2003) were named to Wine Spectator's "Top 100" list.

"I have long believed that a Riesling revival would have to start with a prominent New World winery like Chateau Ste. Michelle."
- Ernst Loosen, Dr. Loosen estate

#21 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2011

A deep crimson color. The nose initially offers floral aromas (violets), which then open out on to fruity aromas (blackcurrant, raspberries, wild peach). On the palate, this Morgon reveals remarkable substance and a delightful fleshiness, while the fruity aromas are confirmed. This Morgon 2009 Domaine Jean Descombes has great finesse, distinction and elegance. Good persistence. A wine poised for a great future.

This wine pairs well with lamb, turkey and venison.
