Australian Wine Companion rating: 92 points
PRICE ON 7/29/2014: $17.99

Winemaker's Notes:

Redolent in cherry and spice, with hints of strawberry, game and Pinot's characteristic velvety texture, this is a subtle, seductive wine of great charm and poise. Enjoy slightly cooler than the usual Australian reds but not too cold as the acids will stand out.
My Notes:

Winemaker's Notes:

The combination of barrel and tank fermentation for this wine has resulted in bright, forward aromatics with beautifully balanced fruit and oak. The texture is soft, with round oak tannins and well-integrated acidity. The layers of melon, pear and pineapple are enhanced by rich toasty oak that leads to a long finish.

Additional wines from Talbott:

About Talbott:

Robert Talbott Sr., his wife Audrey, and their son Robb moved to Carmel, California, in 1950, where they started a luxury tie company. During silk buying trips to Europe for their growing tie business, the Talbotts visited French and Italian vineyards and became interested in fine wines and soon aspired to produce their own California wines, using the Burgundian techniques that they had become passionate about during their European vineyard tours.

They founded Talbott Vineyards in 1982 along with son Robb, with the planting of the 24-acre Diamond T Estate Vineyard and the construction of the first winery in Carmel Valley.

In 1994, when presented with the opportunity, the Talbotts jumped at the chance to acquire the Sleepy Hollow property. With the addition of Sleepy Hollow Vineyard, the Talbotts enjoy the benefits of being a 100 percent estate winery, with direct control of all farming of their vineyards.

Today, Talbott Vineyards produces estate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir under four labels: Talbott, Logan, Case, and Kali Hart. Each line of wine is its own "winery within a winery," with its own distinctive style. The Talbott family plans to keep production small to maintain exacting quality standards and continue to create distinctive handmade wines with intensity, balance, and finesse.

PRICE ON 7/29/2014: $15.99

Winemaker's Notes:

Scharffenberger Brut Excellence is made by the traditional méthode champenoise process – whereby the wines are individually bottle-fermented before being riddled and disgorged. The wine is approximately two-thirds Pinot Noir and one-third Chardonnay and undergoes 100% malolactic fermentation. Scharffenberger Brut is made from its own 120-acre vineyards in the Anderson Valley. In addition, Scharffenberger Cellars has long-term contracts with select vineyards in the greater Mendocino County. This type of vineyard selection allows us to choose from the best vineyards in the area which enables us to produce our trademark cuvée.

The wine is two-thirds Pinot Noir which produces a red fruit (cherry and plum) forward nose combined with one-third Chardonnay which adds the tropical expression of litchi nut and mango. The 100% malolactic fermentation adds a vanilla cream character producing a round and full-bodied wine. After approximately two years on the yeast lees, there are notes of freshly baked bread and pastry that enhances the more fruit forward style of the wine. Finally, after several months on the cork the wine develops caramel and hazel complexors.

About Scharffenberger:

The history of Scharffenberger Cellars begins in 1981 in the heart of California's Anderson Valley. Situated only miles from the coastal influences of the Pacific Ocean, Scharffenberger Cellars also enjoys the deep soils and sunshine within the protected valley. Originally founded by John Scharffenberger, the company has undergone many transitions, including a name change when it was formally known as Pacific Echo from 1998 until July 2004. Today, the name has been restored back to Scharffenberger Cellars under the management of Maisons Marques & Domaines.

Winemaker's Notes:

Pale gold in color with a light straw colored rim. Aromas include apple and peach, along with a bit of quince, merging together with vanilla notes from the minimal sense of toasted oak. On the palate, one finds white peach, along with hints of mineral and toasted almonds, finishing with tart lemony-citrus notes, and a touch of spice from the stirred lees.

Winemaker's Notes:

Structured with elegant ripe tannins and an appealing length of flavor, the ripe berry fruits combine beautifully with hints of fennel and feral forest floor flavors. Inspired by the classic wines of Burgundy, this Pinot Noir is a tribute to Martinborough's unique terroir and the skills and experience of winemaker, Larry McKenna.
My Notes:

About Escarpment Vineyards:

Escarpment Vineyard was established in 1999 as a joint business venture between Robert & Mem Kirby (of Australia's Village Roadshow) and Larry & Sue McKenna. Collectively, these four directors bring to Escarpment a world of experience, skill and understanding to the nurturing and making of fine, deliciously sublime wine.

It goes without saying the impetus behind establishing this vineyard came from the four's deep love for Pinot Noir. Meeting by chance in 1999 through Dr Richard Smith, Larry and Robert quickly hit it off and realised they had more than a love for the grape in common. Serious talk about establishing a definitive New World vineyard began in earnest even then and the 'idea whose time has come' has resulted in one of the most significant vineyard developments in the New Zealand district of Martinborough.

Escarpment is accredited with Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand®, an industry initiative directed through New Zealand Winegrowers. With a growing trade and consumer demand for environmentally friendly products, it provides an important platform to promote the New Zealand wine industry as a world leader in clean, green wine production.
