Wine & Spirits rating: 93 points
PRICE ON 9/16/2014: $21.99

Winemaker's Notes:

"Sirsell," the Catalan word for a grapevine tendril, is a smooth, single-vineyard Priorat wine produced from Capafons-Osso's Mas de l'Amoros property. The grape varieties grown in the vineyard, whose name translates as "Lovers' Lane," are Garnacha, Carinena, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This wine possesses a dark ruby color with aromas of ripe blackberries, Mediterranean herbs and sweet spice. Lively and fruit-forward, this wine is also surprisingly round with mature tannins and a very long finish.
My Notes:

About Capafons-Ossó:

Francesc Capafons and Monserrat Ossó married in the late 1960s, merging their family names and historic vineyards in the Spanish wine regions of D.O.Q. Priorat and D.O. Montsant. Located in northeast Spain, both regions benefit from the tempering influence of the Mediterranean Sea, distinctive slate soils, and a rich winemaking legacy that has left them with a high percentage of ancient, low-yielding vines. From these historic areas, the Capafons-Ossó family produces balanced, expressive wines that continue to garner critical acclaim.

The unique black slate soils of Priorat force the roots of vines to dig deeply for water, resulting in small yields of highly concentrated berries. From their Priorat vineyards the Capafons-Ossó family produces Mas de Masos, a combination of old-vine Garnacha and Cariñena with Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah; Sirsell, a smooth, fruity wine, is blended from Garnacha, Cariñena, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. The Priorat vineyard also produces Masos d’en Cubells, a proprietary blend of Garnacha, Cariñena, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah from vines 50 to 100 years old.

Winemaker's Notes:

Like the bright red ruby the color of this wine resembles, Nita is a rare gem from the Spanish appellation of Priorat. Crisp, clean and bright in color, this wine has a juicy entry that is supported by delicate minerality and a round, smooth finish.

This easy-to-drink wine is the perfect accompaniment to a variety of dishes including BBQ, Chinese, Italian and American cuisine.

About Nita:

Nita is a rare gem from Priorat, a region typically known for its concentrated barrel-aged reds, because it is one of the only unoaked "vino jovens," or young wines, made in this famous appellation. The creation of young winemaker Maritxell Palleja, Nita retains all the characteristic minerality of a Priorat wine, while showcasing the dense fruit flavors of old-vine Garnacha and Cariñena.

Maritxell Palleja is the third generation of her family to have been raised in Priorat, where her great-grandmother Anita built their first family home, “Cal Nita,” the namesake of this wine. After finishing her undergraduate degree in agricultural engineering, Palleja spent a harvest and crush in the Napa Valley and in Bordeaux. She then returned to Priorat and became assistant enologist for Alvaro Palacios, before obtaining her graduate degree in enology and creating her own label, Nita. Palleja carefully selects old-vine Garnacha and Cariñena grapes from the steep, slate-covered vineyards, where low yields produce wines of great expression and complexity. A biodynamic producer, Palleja aligns her vineyard management with lunar and seasonal cycles.

Lockwood Pinot Noir 2009
(search item no. 110858)

PRICE ON 9/16/2014: $15.99

Winemaker's Notes:

This 2009 Pinot Noir has a nice balance of fruit and spice. Aromas of clove and nutmeg accent the strawberry and black cherry tones. As the wine unfolds, it offers flavors of dried cranberry, black tea and toasted French oak. A burst of red fruit complements the middle palate and the wine finishes with balanced tannin. This Pinot Noir pairs well with seasonal salmon and herb roasted duck.

About Lockwood:

Located in Monterey County, on a 1850 acre parcel of calcarious soil (called "Lockwood Shaly Loam"), Lockwood Vineyard was planted in 1981, and started producing in 1989. Lockwood is dedicated to estate bottling and, as winemaker Stephan Pessagno puts it, "wine that is fruit-forward, has good acidity and balance, and complements the best of life's food and wine experiences." The temperature fluctuations-morning temperatures can be 50 degrees and mid-day temperatures 100 or more degrees-make Lockwood able to mature both cool climate and warm climate grape varieties with unprecedented success.

Winemaker's Notes:

Recently, we've been moving towards a less extractive and more elegant style of Pinot that emphasizes perfume, balance and complexity. Consequently, our 2009 Sonoma Coast is more aromatic than previous vintages. It exudes Maraschino cherries, strawberries, vanilla, sandalwood and Oriental spice. While it drinks beautifully now, it will continue to improve over the next two years. I highly recommend serving all of our Pinots in large, wide stemware to amplify the beautiful, haunting aromas. Serve with grilled salmon and Asian food.

Winemaker's Notes:

Bright, cran-rasberry and crushed black pepper aromas; indicative of non-raisiny Dry Creek Zinfandels with notes of white chocolate and espresso from the oak aging. The flavor has concentrated, raspberry fruit with almost sweet (from the oak) and lush palate with forest floor oak complexities. The finish is soft, and is extremely drinkable and fruit driven with wonderful coffee roast flavors. It is to be drunk in its youth, but will age nicely for about 3-5 years. Blend: 82% Zinfandel, 13% Petite Sirah, 6% Syrah

Additional wines from Fattoria Viticcio:

About Fattoria Viticcio:

Founded in 1960 by Lucio and Franca Landini, the Viticcio Estate still stands above the picturesque town of Greve, in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. Their focus is to produce high-quality wines worthy of an international clientele while at the same time respecting the traditions and viticulture of the region. This focus remains the same today under the direction of the second generation, Alessandro Landini.

The estate comprises more than 30 hectares of vines, all of which are farmed organically. Additionally, seven of those hectares are farmed biodynamically. Alessandro strongly believes that in order to produce high-quality wines you must first respect the land in which the vines are planted. To this end he uses no pesticides in his vineyards and fertilizes by planting things such as fava beans and barley between the rows of vines, allowing them to flower, and then plowing them back into the soil to add important nutrients. A handful of wines see some time in the smaller barriques, but the large majority is aged in large botti. The wines of Viticcio represent an important combination of traditional, time-honored techniques with modern-day technology and respect for the environment.

Succulent raspberry, plum and black cherry fruit aromas and hints of brown spice and forest floor announce this delicious Pinot Noir, perhaps our best ever. Complex, round and mouthfilling, the wine glides onto the palate displaying pure black cherry and ripe berry flavors, and the long aftertaste is rich yet fresh and agile.

Delicious with seared Ahi tuna, duck breast with cherry compote, lamb chops, wild mushroom risotto, roast chicken or grilled salmon. Try Manchego or Fontina for the cheese course. Seasoning affinities include orange peel, shaved fennel and dried berries.

We crafted this Chardonnay from select vineyards located in the Sonoma Coast appellation, including the microclimates of western Carneros, southern Sonoma Valley and the Petaluma Gap. Produced in a lively, crisp style that emphasizes varietal character without the use of new oak, it has a spicy citrus bouquet that leads to juicy flavors of white peach and nectarine, followed by a sleek, juicy finish. Try it as an elegant aperitif paired with hors d'oeuvres, or with lighter dishes such as soups, salads, seafood and pasta dishes.

About Schug Estate Winery:

Founded in 1980, Schug Carneros Estate Winery is the showcase and life-long dream of one of California's most celebrated winemakers. The 2007 Shiraz is an intensely concentrated wine with lifted aromatics. The vineyard's elevation gives rise to the cooler climate characteristics of eucalypt and anise on the nose. Rich blackberry and dark chocolate flavours underlie a hint of spice and raspberry on the palate. The wine is wonderfully concentrated with soft, grainy tannins. An excellent representation of complexity and finesse in Shiraz.

Winemaker's Notes:

The Phoenix name recognizes the first winemaking company purchased by Douglas Tolley in South Australia in 1888, the 'The Phoenix Winemaking and Distilling Company.' The nose consists of violets, black currant leaf, ripe wild berry and integrated spice of the Cabernet grape. Mulberry and blackberry are the dominant fruit flavors enhanced by a tight palate with silky grape tannins and elegant complex cedar oak, so typical of Penley Style. A very generous mid palate with a hints of licorice and chocolate lingers on the finish.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Penley Estate:

About Penley Estate:

Established in 1988, by Kym Tolley, a direct descendant of the famous Penfold and Tolley winemaking families – the name Penley is an amalgam of the first three and last three letters from each title.

Tolley has over 25 years of winemaking experience, including being involved in the making of many vintages of the famous Penfolds Grange. The estate is located in the heart of Coonawarra, with the vines planted in the famed "terra rossa" soils – bright red top-soils overlaying soft free-draining limestone.

Critically acclaimed as one of Coonawarra's leading estates, and voted as one of the International Wineries of the Year 2001 by Wine & Spirits Magazine, while the Reserve Cabernet voted best wine of Coonawarra 2001, as judged by winemaking peers and critics.

The Penley Estate signature style comprises distinct, precise, terrior driven wines – not overly oaked or excessively alcoholic. They display ripe clean fruit with true regional character – the senior wines will age for many years.
