Winemaker's Notes:

The 2009 vintage has beautiful aromas of nutmeg, sweet oak and red cherries that carry to the palate. This bright Cabernet Sauvignon has soft, balanced tannins that are complemented by notes of black current and red berries, with an elegant finish of sweet vanilla.

Additional wines from Roth:

About Roth:

Roth Estate is a family-owned winery dedicated to crafting full-flavored wines grown in exemplary Sonoma County vineyards. Beginning in 2001, Roth committed to producing classic Bordeaux varietals in Alexander Valley. A decade later the winery expanded its winemaking to include cool-climate varietals from the Sonoma Coast.

From the same 60 hillside acres in the southeast corner of the Alexander Valley that nurtures Lancaster Estate, comes their newest release, Roth Cabernet Sauvignon.

Tom Prentice, Lancaster Estate’s vineyard manager has totally replanted this site since he arrived here from Screaming Eagle in early 1995. With the low-yielding older vines going exclusively to Lancaster Estate’s flagship wine, their signature blend, Roth becomes a tremendous value from such a pedigreed stock.

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2009 vintage was particularly smooth from start to finish. Budbreak arrived on schedule in the spring, and we saw lower than average rainfall. Healthy flowering led to a very even set, with few heat spikes during the season. Timely veraison and cooler weather later in the season allowed the grapes to ripen slowly and spend additional time on the vine. The Pinot Noir in Monterey lasted a full 8 weeks, beginning in September and lasting all the way into October. By all accounts, 2009 appears to be an outstanding vintage.

In the glass, brooding, earthy aromas meld with juicy ripe plum, punctuated by lovely notes of black tea. The palate echoes the plum-filled nose, joined by black licorice and cocoa powder. A subtle earthiness leads to a generous, fleshy mid-palate and a smooth, mineral-laced finish.

My Notes:

Additional wines from La Crema:

About La Crema:

Since 1979, La Crema Winery has been a pioneer in producing Burgundian varietals from the cool Sonoma coast. They handcraft their wine, one barrel at a time, at their family-owned estate located in the Russian River Valley. Balance, finesse and great fruit intensity come through in every glass of La Crema wine.

La Crema's location in the Russian River Valley is ideal for producing wines of uncompromising elegance and balance. To achieve this goal, several unique steps take place in getting fruit from the vineyards to the bottle. It begins in the vineyard, where careful canopy management and hand harvesting assure fully ripe, undamaged grapes are brought to the winery. At the winery, Winemaker Melissa Stackhouse uses artisan winemaking techniques to handcraft wines of distinctive flavor, elegance and balance.

Winemaker's Notes:

Winemaker Felipe Stahlschmidt observed flavors of dark cherry and blackberry fruit in this 2009 Alamos Malbec, with integrated spice and vanilla oak characteristics. The wine has a full structure and a long, lingering finish which makes it enjoyable now, or for years to come.
My Notes:

Additional wines from Alamos:

About Alamos:

From the vineyard to the winery, the Alamos wines are made to emphasize varietal fruit character. The cool evening temperatures in Catena's high altitude vineyards allow for prolonged hang time, preserving the fruit's full spectrum of aromas and flavors.

At the winery, the grapes are gently destemmed, fermentation temperatures are carefully controlled and two to four year old barrels are used to age the wines.

Winemaker's Notes:

Our Vintage 2000 Estate Grown Chardonnay offers aromatics of citrus and green apple which are complemented by a very slight butterscotch aroma from the malo-lactic fermentation. The oak adds a subtle layer of creaminess. The wine is medium-bodied and well-balanced in the mouth, the flavors consistent with the aromatics. It finishes nicely with a good balance of acidity and rich texture.

Winemaker's Notes:

43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Syrah, 13% Merlot, 3% Barbera, other mixed red.

Teeth-staining dark red with hints of purple. Vibrant aromas of crushed red berries and cherries, notes of cola and cinnamon, and a hint of earthiness. Berry flavors explode in the mouth with cinnamon and cassis in the mid-palate leading to slight cocoa powder tannins on the finish. A very rich, full-bodied style.

This wine is perfection with grilled tri-tip of beef roast—a signature dish of the Central Coastal winegrowing region. In Paso Robles, the beef is grilled chuck wagon-style over a red-oak fire. Serve with other great cowboy fare like baked beans, garlic bread, and a green salad.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Purple Cowboy:

About Purple Cowboy:

The grapes for Purple Cowboy come primarily from Paso Robles, the largest appellation in San Luis Obispo County on California’s famed Central Coast. Over the years, Paso Robles was known for producing structured Cabernet Sauvignon. More recently, a group of winemakers known as the Rhone Rangers has garnered attention with Syrah, a grape well-suited to this warmer region. The Paso Robles AVA is sometimes called Cowboy Wine Country, a reference to its historic identity as a ranching and farming area. Daytime temperatures often top 90 Degrees, but in the evening the vines are cooled by fog cascading down the eastern slope of the Santa Lucia range which separates Paso from the Pacific Coast. Purple Cowboy is sourced from the eastern half of the AVA which is warmer, drier and typically produces full-bodied wines with rich fruit character, soft tannins and balanced acidity.

Winemaker's Notes:

2007 was in many ways an ideal year for Winemakers. We enjoyed a long growing season with moderate temperatures and low yields in the vineyards. This provided us with a small crop of grapes with highly concentrated fruit flavors and well balanced acidity.

Our 2007 Monterey Chardonnay is assembled from specially selected vineyards primarily in the Arroyo Seco and Santa Lucia Highlands appellations of the Salinas Valley. These two areas contribute certain aroma and flavor profiles that when blended, produce an extraordinary wine. Arroyo Seco with its gravelly soils is known for its bright apple and pear flavors with perceptible mineral notes and rich texture. The Santa Lucia Highlands are cooler with deep, well-drained soils producing wines with intense citrus and tropical fruit characters and a crisp, focused structure.

This superb wine is the perfect expression of Monterey Chardonnay. Aromas are expressive of apple and pear with notes of crème brûlée. The palette is very rich with many layers of ripe tropical and citrus fruit flavors accented with toasty oak nuances which linger on a long, creamy finish.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Bernardus:

About Bernardus:

The focus of Bernardus is to create wines that flatter the palate and stimulate the imagination. Our Marinus Estate Bordeaux-style red wine is the centerpiece of owner Ben Pon's dream. It is complemented by Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc from cool coastal climate vineyards. We also offer limited bottlings of small production and vineyard designate wines, which are available exclusively through the tasting room and wine club... taste a dream.

Pon appreciates wine as an art-- a form of art that transcends the ordinary. His dream with Bernardus is to make a red wine equal to the finest from Bordeaux. To achieve this purpose, Ben, a Dutchman who could have planted vineyards anywhere in the world, has chosen the Carmel Valley for his estate vineyards and winery. Since the early 1970's, there has been a growing awareness of the outstanding potential for Bordeaux varieties from this new viticultural appellation. The Bernardus estate vineyards of Marinus and Featherbow Ranch are located in the Cachagua region of the Carmel Valley. We have been told that Cachagua is the Spanish word Native Americans used for deep or hidden water. It has been said that Native Americans believed that all things in nature were sacred and interrelated. Their respect for balance in nature is carried on in the vineyards of Bernardus. More than 300 live oaks have been preserved to thrive among carefully planted vines.

Bright ruby red in color. The bouquet is elegant, fragrant and inviting. The intense fruity notes, typical for Sangiovese intertwine with spicy sweet notes derived from the Merlot. The oak ageing adds complexity and length to the aromas with delicious hints of walnuts, tobacco and cassis. On the palate, Il Ducale is refreshingly fruity yet elegant. It is medium bodied, with mellow tannins and has a lovely balance of ripe fruit and acidity. Flavors are intense and lingering, characterized by hints of blueberries, raspberries and cocoa. Il Ducale is a modern, Tuscan wine born from Ruffino's century old winemaking tradition."

The grapes for IL DUCALE are sourced in vineyards located in the most prestigious vine growing areas of Tuscany. Ruffino's estate vineyards contribute to the production of this wine.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Ruffino:

About Ruffino:

In 1877, Illario and Leopoldo Ruffino laid the foundations of their dream to make the most known and loved Italian wines in the world from the heart of Tuscany. At their winery in Pontassieve, just outside of Florence, they began producing wines according to a strict quality standard and a rigorous technical research. Soon, Ruffino became an international symbol of the Chianti region, and won numerous awards, including the prestigious gold medal at the Bordeaux Wine Fair in 1895, affirming the quality of its wine.

In 1913, the Folonari family purchased Ruffino and brought new talent, energy and enthusiasm into the company. They started on a nearly century-long pursuit to develop a collection of estates in Tuscany, all of which matched the standard of quality and uniqueness which was the trademark of Ruffino wine.

Over the last sixty years, Ruffino has established seven prominent estates in Tuscany, all situated within the major DOCG production regions including Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Chianti and Chianti Classico. Today, Ruffino continues to meld century-long Tuscan traditions with new state-of-the-art cellar technology and modern winemaking for an ideal symbiosis with the energy of the contemporary Italian lifestyle.
