Winemaker's Notes:

Nipozzano 2009 is a lovely ruby-red. The nose opens with dark wild berries and cherry, hints of cotton candy and pleasant floral notes of lilac and chocolate. The spicy component emerges with nuances of clove and green peppercorn. The palate is characterized by a distinct tactile approach in which the stamp of the terroir is underlined by a lively minerality. The tannin texture is thight but not sharp, which is also an expression of the uniqueness of the soils of Nipozzano. The finish returns to the intense fruity notes already identified on the nose.

Serve with barbecued meat and beef stews or aged cheeses.

About Frescobaldi:

The Marchesi de' Frescobaldi is one of Italy's oldest wineries, with a history dating to the 1300s. The family has included medieval knights, bankers, lawyers and patrons of the arts. The Marchesi de' Frescobaldi is one of the most significant wine producers in Italy, with nine estates—and roughly 2,500 acres—in Tuscany. The family has been growing wine since the late 19th century, when they became the first in Tuscany to import and plant French vine cuttings. Because they have been producing wines for more than 700 years, to experience Frescobaldi is to glimpse the history of Florence, from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Wine Spectator has ranked many of their offerings in the 90s and their wines are consistently listed in the magazine's Top 100 Wines of the Year, encouraging wine enthusiasts from around the globe to become familiar with some of Italy's finest wines.

Tilia Malbec has a dark, blackish purple color. The nose offers ripe black fruits, black pepper spice and floral notes. The mouthfeel is full yet soft and supple, with black raspberry and currant flavors mingled with notes of sweet spice and a touch of leather. The finish is long and persistent with soft, sweet tannins.

Additional wines from Tilia:

About Tilia:

Named after the Tilia (Linden) tree commonly found throughout Argentina’s wine country, Tilia wines possess true varietal character and embody the rural Mendozean lifestyle. For years vineyard workers have used the flowers of the Tilia to make an herbal tea for enjoyment after a hard day’s work. The name Tilia is chosen in honor of this wine country tradition.

The Tilia wines are made at Bodegas Esmeralda, a Catena family winery in the Eastern region of Mendoza that is dedicated to making value wines for the Argentine domestic market. Tilia wines offer a unique combination of fruit sourced from the traditional Eastern region and the dynamic Southern region of Mendoza. The Eastern region of Mendoza enjoys warm, sunny days and cool desert nights. The grapes have very ripe, rich fruit flavors and excellent mid-palate depth and concentration. Bright sunshine and low temperatures of the Southern region lend a cool freshness. The fruit from this area shows clean acid balance and soft, supple tannins.

Tilia is dedicated to responsible use of the environment. The winemaking and viticultural team actively engage in many practices and programs throughout the community to implement sustainability. Water conservation and reuse, minimal use of pesticides and organic fertilization are several examples of the team’s dedication. Furthermore, the entire Tilia viticultural team attends regular sustainability training sessions at the National University of Cuyo and National Agricultural Research Institute. They take this training into the field to share and implement with their grower partners.

Winemaker's Notes:

Meiomi (May-oh-mee) is a Pinot Noir that gets its fruit from the most noteworthy coastal areas in California. The wine is crafted, lush, balanced and luxurious. Three of the California's most sought after coastal growing regions brilliantly meld together in this deeply flavored, stylish and truly balanced Pinot Noir; at its most fundamental core, it is an approachable, food friendly wine with a style and place all its own.

Deep, rich garnet color. The wine opens up with aromas of ripe berries, fresh cranberry, candy apple and malted vanilla, some of which carries through to the palate. There's a hint of Granny Smith apple on first sip that beautifully balances out the rich cream soda and cherry cola notes. It is an extremely layered wine, both in structure and flavor, with a slight earthiness and sweet oak on the finish. The wine almost contradicts itself, managing to display freshness and maturity all at the same time, which is achieved through careful blending.

My Notes:

Additional wines from Meiomi:

About Meiomi:

The name Meiomi means "coast" in the language of the native, coastal dwelling Wappo and Yuki tribes, and best pays tribute to and symbolizes the origin of this Pinot Noir. Meiomi is a high style Pinot Noir that is shaped, more than anything else, by the fruit sources that lay the foundation of the blend. A pure bred enjoyment wine, built to accommodate any pairing from food to friends. Unifying California’s most noteworthy coastal areas opens the door for a dynamic and opulent wine that is ready to enjoy whenever you are.

In the mouth plum and strawberry, accompanied by a slight sweetness, principally from the merlot, can be found. It's intense, balanced and round, with ripe tannins and a long finish.

Additional wines from Cousino Macul:

About Cousino Macul:

In 2006, Cousiño-Macul celebrated its 150th anniversary. The Cousiño family's wine estate in Santiago was established in 1856. Five years ago, the Cousiños moved many of their vines to a new estate at Buin, and built a new winery there. Few wine producers have the opportunity to make a completely new start, incorporating the best of their age-old experience, their unique vines from their personal greenhouse and the most contemporary technology available.

As the technology continues to advance in the vineyards and in the wineries around the world, Cousiño Macul has seized this opportunity and taken a grand leap into the future. Although moving quickly into the future, they take with them the most important part of their long history - their genetic plant material that was originally brought into Chile in 1863. The Cousiño's vineyard and winery in Macul became the proudest achievement of the family. The new vineyard and winery in Buin are now in the hands of the sixth generation.

Winemaker's Notes:

L'Infidèle is our historical cuvee. It is a blend of all the local grapes, which provides its elegance and structure. It can be tasted in its early years thanks to its balance, and its expression will grow in complexity over 10 years and more. Ageing for 18 months. 500 l barrels for 60 to 80% of the final blend.

"L'Infidèle" reminds us with Jean-Pierre Jullien, estate founding father, who criticized the traditional langedocian extensive vine-growing methods to contribute to creating the quality practices in Languedoc that have paved the way of the reputation of the estate.

Very generous nose (dark and red fruits, garrigue, liquorice…). Full-bodied wine with nice tannins, a complex aromatic expression and a long and mineral finish... Maturity 10 to 15 years.

Food-pairing: When young: grilled meat with herbs, tajine, tapenade / at maturity: Game, Daube "à la Provençale", cassoulet, terroir cheeses (Cantal, St Nectaire…).

My Notes:

About Mas Cal Demoura:

In the Occitan language, "Cal Demoura" Means "Must Stay" .
At the time of Languedoc winemakers were abandoning their land, Jean-Pierre Jullien, passionate winemaker, had made this his motto motto. Having opted very early for a qualitative approach and respectful of the land, it is part of the winegrowers that have marked the history of the quality revolution of Languedoc wines ... Driven by his passion for wine and aware of potential local Terrasses du Larzac, it retains only its best vineyards and wine making in starting Mas Cal Demoura in the 1990s in the town of Jonquières.

Isabelle & Vincent Goumard, wine enthusiasts, whom graduated in enology from the University of Dijon, succeeded him to the field when he retired. They bought these parcels of vines (red and white) at Mas Jullien on the soil of limestone gravel COMBARIOLLES of very high quality.
Since then they have constantly to keep working in the footsteps of Jean-Pierre Jullien to produce great wines, natural wines that reflect the complexity of the soil and the balance of which allows them to age with great quality. The estate has 11 ha of vineyards and produces 40,000 bottles a year.

Vibrant red color with aromas of red cherries, raspberries, and violets wafting from the glass along with notes of toasty oak. On the palate, the fresh berry flavors mingle with spice notes and there's a hint of soft caramel on the finish. This is a creamy, medium-bodied and well-structured wine that is incredibly full of life.

Goes great with everything from hamburgers and chicken to pasta and mild cheeses.

Additional wines from La Posta:

About La Posta:

We have tasted over a thousand wines since we began importing from Argentina. In that time, we have discovered a handful of grape growers whose results in the vineyards with specific varietals have been truly amazing--year in, year out. Our first encounter with many of these growers was at a posta del vinatero, or "tavern of the grape grower." Here they drank wine and spoke passionately for hours about their soils, their vines, and their quest for superior flavors in their grapes. We salute the hard work and skill of these growers by offering these vineyard-designated releases made solely with their special grapes.

The Syrah Tous les Jours is a quintisential Santa Ynez Valley Syrah. It is simultaneously bold and balanced, rich and smooth, fruit forward and earthy. It is impossibly dark and full-bodied, without ever going over the top. It is heavily inspired by Northern Rhone Syrah (Hermitage) and Australian Shiraz (Borassa Valley). The aromas and flavors are dominated by black cherry, raspberry, white pepper, forrest floor and toasty oak. It is absolutely unique and special expression of Syrah. Moreover, It is a style that one can enjoy every day.

About Castello di Fonterutoli:

Castello di Fonterutoli, source of some of Italy's most prestigious wines, is an historic property embracing an entire tranquil, centuries-old hamlet just south of Castellina in Chianti, in the heart of Chianti Classico. The estate has been in the hands of the Mazzei family – devoted to winemaking for 24 generations – since 1435 and is today led by Lapo Mazzei and his sons, Francesco and Filippo.

This dynamic family has carefully safeguarded the inherent beauty and rich heritage of Fonterutoli, while simultaneously implementing measures to ensure cutting-edge quality in the vineyards and cellars. An exciting example of this dedication to quality is the in-progress construction of a stunning new cellar that operates via gravity and clean energy, and has already been defined as "the most impressive in the entire Chianti region" by Steven Spurrier of Decanter Magazine.

My Notes:

About The Prisoner Wine Company:

The Prisoner Founder and Winemaker Dave Phinney’s deep respect for the vineyards is rooted in an early attempt to make a sophisticated wine from a difficult site. Although he was frustrated by a situation that had him using every tool at his disposal and still coming up short, he learned lessons that inform his vineyard selection process now.

"I came away from that experience with the unshakable belief that if you put your emphasis on the vineyard, what follows is much easier," he says. "The vineyard is everything."

Most of Phinney’s time is spent exploring vineyard sites, meeting with growers and selecting the fruit that will be vinified and blended into The Prisoner. His method for vineyard selection includes assessing the site, soil, varietal, grower and provenance, or the history, of the vineyard.

"Sometimes one of these aspects is enough, other times it's a combination of a few of these elements," he says. "With provenance, looks can be deceiving, so you have to trust in the track record of a vineyard as opposed to what you see. Occasionally you step into a vineyard and can't get to your phone fast enough to call the grower and lock up the grapes. Those experiences are one of a kind."
