Winemaker's Notes:

#37 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2012

Classic natural sweet Spatlese with nice acidity and elegant, natural residual sugar. This wine pairs perfectly with Asian cuisine due to the harmony of sweetness and acidity. Also interesting taste combinations can be achieved through the pairing of blue-veined cheese or a fruit desert.

Additional wines from Schloss Vollrads:

About Schloss Vollrads:

Schloss Vollrads can look back on centuries of wine-making tradition. According to an ancient deed, the Knights of Greiffenclau sold their wines to the convent of St. Victor in Mainz as long ago as 1211. Today, Schloss Vollrads combines 800 years of its tradition with the latest in wine-making engineering, environmental awareness in cultivation, and meticulous care of the wines. Some 126 acres of vineyards are solely devoted to the Riesling grape.

The distinctive quality of Schloss Vollrads wines is derived from the combination of well-thought out measures, not least the absolute consistency in continuing to grow Riesling grapes. Moreover, the stringency in limiting the harvest by pruning the vines, the careful tending of the vineyards working on the latest ecological know-how, the late selective hand-picking of the grapes, their pressing, the individual storage of the juices and the careful supervision of the maturing process of the wines are just some of the distinctive features involved.

Winemaker's Notes:

"One of the finest bargains in California Cabernet Sauvignon must be Louis M. Martini's outstanding 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma. Fabulously sweet aromas of black currants, licorice, and cedar soar from the glass of this medium to full-bodied wine. With silky tannins as well as surprising concentration, depth, and texture, this 2006 should drink well for 8-10 years."
-Robert Parker, Wine Advocate

The 2006 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon was crafted from several of Sonoma County's most prestigious appellations and blended seamlessly to bring together the unique characteristics of each, creating a superbly balanced Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine offers many layers, featuring aromas and flavors of red cherry, blackberry and fresh sage with an underlying dry creek dustiness. Subtle herbal notes are complemented by additional layers of chocolate and vanilla, resulting in a complex, yet easy drinking, wine.

Winemaker's Notes:

Dark ruby-black color. Lovely herbal, black cherry, plum, cassis and dark chocolate aromas. Medium full-bodied, with lush berry, anise and jam flavors, balanced by sweet lush fruit and supple tannins.

Very fine Cabernet fruit flavors and firm but plush texture make this wine drinkable now, yet capable of aging for 5-8 years. Enjoy with grilled meat dishes, a rich lamb stew or firm cheeses like Manchego.

My Notes:

About Beaulieu Vineyard:

The deep roots of Beaulieu Vineyard were first planted back in 1900, when founder Georges de Latour noticed similarities with his native Bordeaux and declared the Napa Valley ideal for winemaking. Planting vineyards in Rutherford with grafted, phylloxera-resistent French vines, the Cabernet Sauvignon that de Latour crafted from these grapes gave the world a taste of California's promise as a world-class winemaking region. In 1938, de Latour hired the young Russian-French enologist, Andre Tchelistcheff. Today, Beaulieu continues to turn to innovative practices. Most recently, they completed a new state-of-the-art winery within one of their original buildings. The Georges de Latour Private Reserve Winery utilizes the latest technology in combination with time-honored traditions for the production of this exceptional wine.

Dark and densely concentrated, expressive aromas of blackberry, currants and subtle notes of thyme and cinnamon lead to flavors of blackberry, black plum and a bit of black olive. Knit together with big, mouth-coating tannins, this is an engagingly well-structured, bold-statement wine.

About Robert Mondavi Winery:

For more than 40 years, Robert Mondavi Winery has been the symbol of Napa Valley. Founded in 1966, it was the first major winery built in Napa Valley in the three decades following the repeal of Prohibition (1933), and went on to establish the foundation for modern California winemaking. Robert Mondavi Winery's mission-styled architecture, with the expansive archway and bell tower designed by Cliff May, has become an enduring landmark that honors California's history. With the philosophy that great wines reflect their origins, Robert Mondavi Winery pursues the fullest expression of the terroir of its Napa Valley vineyards: the historic To Kalon Vineyard in the Oakville American Viticultural Area (AVA), and the Wappo Hill Vineyard in the Stags Leap Vineyard AVA.

Winemaker's Notes:

Our 2004 Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon is an extravagant wine of great depth and concentration exhibiting complex aromas of black currants, tea leaves and dark chocolate. The wine is ready for enjoyment now but its full-bodied tannins will allow it to improve for many years.

The 2004 Vintage marks the 30th release of Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon from Kenwood. The harvest produced Cabernet Sauvignon with a distinctly rich and ripe flavor that is followed by spicy and aromatic notes that add complexity. After picking, the grapes were crushed and fermented in stainless steel tanks and then settled and racked twice before going down to barrels in December of 2004. After 30 months of barrel aging the best lots were carefully selected and then blended and bottled. After bottling, the wine was aged for an additional year and a half before it was released.

Each year since the 1975 vintage our winemakers taste individual barrels of our finest lots of Cabernet Sauvignon at the end of aging and select only the best to become part of the Artist Series blend. The result is a flavorful and intense that represents less than 2% of our Cabernet production.

About the Artist
Artist Shepard Fairey began crafting his approach while he was still a student at The Rhode Island School of Design. Fairey believes that art is not only intended for museums and galleries, but should also be an integral part of the visual landscape. His work exemplifies bold, graphic media that stands out amid the urban clutter, beautifying the environment while stimulating the public to think critically. He is one of today's best-known and most influential street artists. The "Peace Woman" is a symbolic representation of the peaceful, nurturing side of humanity. Fairey feels that the female trait of empathy should be embraced to maintain a balanced society.

Additional wines from Kenwood Vineyards:

About Kenwood Vineyards:

Located in the heart of the Sonoma Valley, Kenwood Vineyards is dedicated to producing premium wines truly representative of Sonoma County’s world-class vineyards.

Kenwood Vineyards was established in 1970 in the former Pagani Brothers Winery, a historic cellar dating back to 1906. Thoroughly refurbished and modernized, the facility now boasts more than 125 stainless steel fermenting tanks and large oak uprights, and 20,000 small French and American oak barrels, all devoted to Kenwood Vineyards’ “small lot” style of winemaking.

In addition to the 22-acre vineyard surrounding the winery, Kenwood Vineyards sources grapes from dozens of vineyards – many farmed sustainably, using natural soil amendments and pest controls whenever possible rather than chemicals - in Sonoma County’s best appellations, including Russian River Valley, Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma Valley and Sonoma Mountain. Each lot from each vineyard is kept separate throughout the winemaking process, enabling the winemaker to bring it to its fullest potential. This “small lot” or “cuvee” style of winemaking also enables the winemaker to draw on an exceptionally broad “palette” to assemble wines that showcase classic character, subtle complexity and superb balance. As a result, every Kenwood Vineyards wine – whether Table Wine Series, Sonoma Series, Reserve, Jack London Vineyard or Artist Series – is consistent in quality and consistently delicious.

Winemaker's Notes:

A combination of Merlot (18%), Cabernet Franc (2%), Petit Verdot (4%), and Cabernet Sauvignon (76%) creates well-integrated flavors, deep color, and balance. The bouquet offers distinct notes of cassis, black cherry, and cocoa. The aromatic qualities of the Petit Verdot marry well with the soft, alluring flavors of Merlot and complement the masculine tannins of the Cabernet Sauvignon.

Jordan 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon has a rich texture and opulent flavors, complemented by a restrained framework of oak that leads to a lingering finish of violet, earth, smoke, and cola.

The grapes were fermented fourteen days in stainless steel to complete yeast fermentation, followed by three weeks in large oak cooperage while completing malolactic fermentation. The wine was aged in 71% French and 29% American small oak barrels for twelve months and in large oak cooperage for an additional six months. The wine was then bottled and aged for an additional seventeen months at the winery.

The 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine that possesses layers of cassis, blackberry, coffee, cedar and vanilla. Rich, intense and complex, the 1999 vintage will be remembered as one of the more age worthy wines we have produced.

Each distinctive terroir interweaves complementary components which culminate in a preeminent Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, a gestalt of balanced, rich, concentrated character.

With concentrated aromas of cassis, cherry, cedar, red rose petal and tobacco, this wine's complexity continues through the flavors, which include red currant, cherry, blackberry and blueberry with a hint of vanilla from oak aging.
